Security risks (AI-driven hacks, mathematical breakthroughs & quantum computing) have become increasingly concerning in recent weeks both personally & for the broader market.
$ZEC looks like the best way to play this, and the market is already showing us that with clear divergence vs BTC/ETH/SOL/HYPE/TOTAL3ES over the past couple weeks.
Additionally, short-term spot & derivatives positioning looks significantly cleaner vs earlier this month. ETF flows have just flipped positive again after ~3 weeks of outflows, while coin-denominated OI is at its lowest level since August.
Separately, OTC desks are still seeing strong interest from liquid & VC funds, with ZEC reportedly remaining one of the most bought altcoins by funds even at these elevated prices.
I generally view protocol upgrades as weak catalysts in isolation, but the January upgrade feels different. Tachyon addresses the scalability improvements the community has been waiting for, while the quantum component of the upgrade addresses one of the highest mindshare risks to the industry. Together, I think they make for a much stronger catalyst than either would on its own.
I haven’t looked too deeply into the underlying tech or whether the proposed upgrades will actually deliver meaningful quantum resistance, and I don’t care to. When all the tastemakers (Naval, Balaji, a16z, Paradigm, Dragonfly & Multicoin) are pushing the ZEC narrative as a hedge against BTC, the realities of what it’s tech can or can’t actually do aren’t part of the thesis.
The combination of improving positioning, continued institutional demand, relative strength & an increasingly powerful narrative makes for an attractive setup, even in shaky market conditions. I expect my conviction to continue building as we approach January.
I have no strong view on market direction over the coming months, and the quantum tailwind for ZEC is a headwind for BTC, so I’m hedged vs BTC on a vol-adjusted basis, but think a naked long is also justified.
Quantum is the crypto equivalent of cancer and ZEC is the cure. Don’t find yourself Zidelined on the road past $2k

Formal verification can prove that code is free of certain bugs, but historically it has only been feasible for small codebases (or required a lot of expert time).
With AI models, however, this is beginning to change. In collaboration with @theoremlabs, we used Claude to prove security properties in over one hundred real-world open-source libraries over the span of a few weeks.

Once you understand market structure and psychology, you start wondering what everyone else is looking at.
Look at the history of $ZEC.
What exactly is this chart doing that it hasn’t done before? Every marked overextension during its euphoric phases has eventually reverted to the mean.
Yet on the run to $1,600, people were trying to convince me that it wouldn’t happen this time and we’d never see $1,000 again.
Now that price has returned to the mean, those same bulls are wondering how much lower it can go, while bears are trying to convince them it’s going to zero.
The market is simply rebalancing after a euphoric overextension.
Expansion, followed by consolidation and reversion.
Reversion, followed by consolidation and the opportunity for another expansion.
You don’t need to be a permanent bull or bear to understand mean reversion.

GOOGLE ANNOUNCES MAJOR QUANTUM COMPUTING BREAKTHROUGH WITH IMPLICATIONS FOR BITCOIN SECURITY
Google Quantum AI researchers have achieved 99.99% logical fidelity in producing “magic states” on the company’s 105-qubit Willow processor, reducing errors by 40x.
The breakthrough, published in Science, addresses one of the biggest engineering bottlenecks preventing quantum computers from scaling to the point where they could threaten Bitcoin’s cryptography.
Earlier this year, Google published research suggesting that breaking Bitcoin’s cryptography could require fewer than 500,000 physical qubits, roughly 20x fewer than previous estimates.
That was an algorithmic breakthrough, demonstrating how an attack could theoretically be performed with fewer resources.
Today’s announcement represents a complementary hardware breakthrough, demonstrating progress toward making the necessary quantum operations reliable and less resource-intensive.
While this does not mean Bitcoin’s cryptography can be broken today, it represents another significant step toward cryptographically relevant quantum computers.
The timeline for a potential quantum threat to Bitcoin remains uncertain, but the case for accelerating Bitcoin’s transition toward quantum-resistant cryptography continues to strengthen.
