๐Ÿ˜ญWhat is going on with some fic authors?? Treating AO3 like social media where engagement is expected rather than appreciated is wild. As a writer myself, I love kudos and comments, but back in my day, someone downloading your fic to reread offline was the highest praise.

One side of my TL is fic writers complaining about people sharing their work because they won't get โ€œengagementโ€ on AO3, while the other side is writers (myself included) asking readers if they still have copies of our fics/๐Ÿ˜ญ

writers who have been procrastinating (me) and have unfinished fics that haven't been updated in a long time (also me) we (me specifically) have an opportunity to catch up and surprise our readers when ao3 is back

am I being too harsh or "without the author gaining any site engagment" is absolutely stupid? ao3 is an archive, not a social media or a fic site. you shouldnt care about "gaining" anything.

you do know the end of every downloaded fic is this note. It links back to the original url. Itโ€™s not like people somehow are trying to circumvent giving you clicks and kudos and comments- the downloads are literally set up to encourage reader interaction.

am I too woke of a fic writer to be a little conflicted about fics being downloaded to personal drives without the authorโ€™s knowledge and shared/read without the author gaining any site engagment or is this something I should brush off and get over /gen

ao3 comes back up and 50,000 people post the fics they had been stockpiling for 4 weeks all at once, which then immediately crashes the site again
