After having one breast removed due to cancer, I elected to have the second one removed the following year. Psychologically I couldn't face mammograms every six months, and my natural breast would never match my new implant.
I reasoned it this way: I didn't choose to have the first removed, cancer took it... but I could make my own decision about my other breast.
I remember my surgeon being very adamant he did not recommend that I (a post-menopausal woman) have a healthy organ removed. It made me feel quite stressed that he felt this way about it. I later learned that he has a private clinic that performs 'gender affirming surgeries'.
