SB79 treats neighborhoods not as places where people live and work but as dots on a map. It’s an expression of ego rather than planning. Capitol housing reform wrongly targets the sacred power to shape California locally calmatters.org/commentary/20…

I like the 15-minute city idea. So let's have a few for people who want that? But no! #YIMBYs say we gotta burn it all down and make EVERYTHING a 15-minute city. Why? allaspectreport.com/2024/08/…

Interesting. California took $24B from taxpayers to address their homelessness crisis. I wonder where that money went…

To @Scott_Wiener and the rest of the developer shills in Sacramento. We don't need to blight our state with more high-rise market-rate housing. We were the #2 outbound state in 2023 and are home to 2 of 5 of the top outbound cities, for crying out loud.

To be crystal clear, all the NIMBYs I know oppose only high-rises in low-rise neighborhoods. We welcome all neighbors who want to live the low-rise life. For high-rise living, the corridors make the most sense for focusing supporting infrastructure. laist.com/news/housing-homel…

Actor Dean Cain told Newsmax on Tuesday that there are many reasons why he and Hollywood stars like Mark Wahlberg are leaving California, though his biggest reason comes down to one: California Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom. I’ve shot one movie in California in the last … I can't even remember how many years. Like, it just doesn't happen. We go everywhere else. We're in Louisiana, we’re in Georgia, we’re in Texas … we're everywhere except for California.” “The policies in California, the tax policies, the homeless crisis, the poor work by the DAs, whether it's [Los Angeles DA] George Gascon or others, the crime … [there’s] every reason in the world to get out That's why [Newsom and officials are] trying to come up with ideas like, ‘How can we tax anybody who lived here within the last 10 years, or anybody whose worth is over $10 million?’” Cain continued. “Whatever it is, anybody with any sense is going to get out of there and go somewhere else, where they can keep the money that they make. … It only makes sense.” “It's just the arrogance of Gavin Newsom and of California … [it’s] one of the most business-unfriendly states that there are. That's why Elon Musk left. That's why Hollywood's leaving. That's why everybody flees, and we lost a congressional seat,” he said, then corrected himself. “Well, they lost a congressional seat.” How many have to say Newsom is destroying California? The rich elites are leaving The middle class is escaping The Collage Age youth aren’t coming home Future under Gavin Newsom look worse than the present and today isn’t so great You might want to take those shades off Gavin

I’ve been posting for several weeks about the surge in violent attacks - attempted murders, rapes, stabbing, etc, on or near @santamonicacity beach. I was DIRECTLY told by politicians to STOP posting because it reduces tourism. Now 3 or more stabbed again! Today! This MUST stop. I call on Mayor @PhilBrock4SM Vice Mayor @lananegretesm City Manager White @ City Attorney Sloan plus councilmembers @jessezwick @ctorosis @GleamDavis @odelatorre16 to IMMEDIATELY: 1. Set up an emergency city council meeting over the weekend 2. Add numerous armed security and @LASDHQ to patrol, stop all suspicious individuals, & arrest/prosecute ALL criminals 3. Immediately END ALL drug needle & meth/crack pipe distribution in the city to violent drug addicts 4. Prosecute all drug dealers 5. Utilize your new powers after this week’s Supreme Court decision to humanely & immediately relocate all 1000 homeless in the city (who are documented to be the source of most violent & property crime here) to suitable locations outside of city limits. 6. Put a PERMANENT halt to ALL programs that attract more homeless to Santa Monica including promises of $1-2M condos for life, free services etc. 7. Promise to add at least 100 ARMED @SantaMonicaPD @SantaMonicaPOA officers to the city and empower them yo anything it takes, within the limits of the law, to end crime. Your “progressive” experiment has FAILED. Blood is on YOUR hands. People are being hurt and killed every DAY in this city yet you silence those who speak out. Never again. This city has already paid out over $300 MILLION because city officials covered up ONE city employee molesting hundreds of boys. Imagine how much more taxpayer money will now be spent on settlements for your inaction & dereliction of duty. Do the right thing today or RESIGN. We will not be silenced. FYI @BillMelugin_ @TheSMCoalition @Strollerqueen1 @SMObserved @smdailypress

Upending single-family zoning isn't the answer This theory has been debunked by the Urban Institute. It looked at 180 zoning reforms affecting density in 1136 cities & found that changing zoning was associated with a less than 1% increase in housing supply startribune.com/counterpoint…

Here’s a great way to limit homeowners’ “massive profits”: downzone (ie limit home sizes on individual lots). This would help curb both mansionization and speculation. Upzoning only increases homeowners’ “massive profits,” so if you want to do something about it: downzone!
Fuel grannie will always defend the neoliberal right of homeowners to massive profit

Row homes have been the backbone of traditional walkable urban neighborhoods for centuries, and this guy wants to ban them by getting rid of single family zoning. How come everyone involved in the urbanist movement knows so little about cities.

The audit of homelessness spending in California is finally out, and the results are infuriating: "California spent $24 billion to tackle homelessness over the past five years but didn’t consistently track whether the huge outlay of public money actually improved the situation." I first asked for the audit in 2020, but Newsom intervened to kill it. Now we know why he didn't want his spending examined. Last year, Assemblyman Josh Hoover got the audit approved, and the findings released today are even worse than I expected. The audit found that the California Interagency Council on Homelessness "stopped tracking spending on programs and whether programs were working in 2021. It also failed to collect and evaluate outcome data for these programs." Even a Democrat State Senator decried the "lack of transparency at every level." Meanwhile, homelessness has increased by 32 percent in California over the last five years. It has increased 67 percent in Sacramento. And half the nation's unsheltered homeless now live in our state. In short: California is spending more and more on homelessness and the problem continues to get worse worse and worse. Far worse than anywhere else in America. It's yet another example of how our citizens sacrifice the most and get the least in return.

For the past 20 years, young urbanists and the developers for whom the advocate have been busy displacing minority residents of the urban neighborhoods they've been reclaiming but prefer to live in denial.
"They can only move here if other people are displaced" is a very good way of putting the default view that millions of Americans have about how neighborhoods/communities work.
