Eighty-five years ago today, Freedom House was founded to serve as a “beacon lighting [the] struggle for a free world”.
This telegram, sent to Eleanor Roosevelt days earlier from Freedom House cofounder Herbert Agar, outlined plans for an organization that would urge Americans to reject isolationism and stand against the fascist forces advancing across Europe.
Since 1941, Freedom House has worked across party lines to defend democracy and stand with people risking their lives for freedom. We are proud to carry that legacy forward, and you can be part of its next chapter: freedomhouse.org/investing-f…

It was such a wonderful evening at the @NED to be one of those honored by the October 30th Coalition for our work to free political prisoners over our careers. It was made all the more special to be with my former clients Felix @Maradiaga (#Nicaragua) (and his wife @BertaValle who introduced me), @Jschamorrog (Nicaragua) (and his wife @VickyCardenasL), @liliantintori and @antonietamlopez (#Venezuela) (@leopoldolopez's wife and mother), and @yangjianli001 (#China).
These are some excerpts of my remarks:
"It is a tremendous honor to be recognized ... but this has never been about me. It has always been about the #PoliticalPrisoners and their families, the most effective advocates for themselves and for their people ..."
"It has been the honor of a lifetime, with my stellar team, to stand in solidarity with, support, and be inspired by the #humanrights heroes of our time."
"It brings me such joy to be here tonight with my former clients and their spouses. Each showed courage, grace, and dignity under unimaginable pressure. I risked only defeat; they risked their lives and they persevered. They will forever be my sisters and brothers ..."
"Every win is a collective win. No one can say what finally opens a cell door: a UN judgment, a president’s phone call or tweet, a diplomat’s quiet word, or even the prisoner themselves. And as for me, I have simply tried to do my part ..."
"So I leave you with a strong sense of optimism. In every generation, in every country where people face repression, there are those who risk everything to speak truth to power, to demand justice and accountability, and to inspire others to join the fight."
Growing up, I always wondered what it'll feel like to walk the very grounds where Martin Luther King proclaimed his dream of freedom. Y'day, my picture in display at the Lincoln memorial is a victory step towards my very own freedom. I'll walk those grounds as a free man one day

“Many will say about my mother, Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza, that she is a very capable leader. And to explain to my two sons that this is why their grandmother is held in prison in Rwanda breaks my heart.”
These heartbreaking words were spoken by Raïssa Ujeneza, daughter of Rwandan opposition leader Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza, during her speech in Washington on the International Day of Political Prisoners.
Her testimony is a powerful reminder that behind every political prisoner is a family enduring separation, uncertainty, missed milestones and years that can never be recovered.
@VictoireUmuhoza spent eight years in prison, including five years in solitary confinement. She missed precious moments in the lives of her husband, three children and five grandchildren. Since her re-arrest in June 2025, she has been denied the opportunity to attend church services with other prisoners.
Her case has been examined by two prominent international human rights mechanisms, both of which found serious violations of her fundamental rights:
- In 2017, the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights ruled that Rwanda had violated her rights to freedom of expression and defence in judicial proceedings.
- In 2026, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention concluded that her detention was arbitrary and called for her immediate release and reparations.
Despite these findings, Victoire Ingabire remains imprisoned.
Yet, despite years of persecution, imprisonment and separation from her loved ones, she remains committed to her vision of a better future for Rwanda.
Raïssa concluded her speech with a moving message to her mother: “Mom, you do not stand alone.”
Political imprisonment does not punish only those behind bars. Its consequences reach across families and generations. Behind every political prisoner are loved ones who also pay the price for injustice.
Victoire Ingabire must be released immediately and unconditionally.

Forty-four years ago, at just 26, my life partner, Dr Kizza Besigye, abandoned his career as a medical doctor to join a liberation struggle against dictatorship in Uganda.
We won that war. But tragically, the liberators became the oppressors.
Kizza refused to betray the ideals for which he had risked his life. In 2001, he challenged his former commander for the presidency…../2
