Nice going, everyone.
Alabama passed a law, 138 votes to nothing, that makes every phone user in the state prove their age before downloading a single app.
A 45-year-old who wants a news app has to hand ID to Google first. Existing accounts get no pass either. Every one of them must be verified by October 2027.
Teenagers will need a parent’s sign-off to install Wikipedia, Duolingo or a Bible app, and kids without a parent to ask get locked out completely.
Apple, Google and Amazon’s lobby group has now sued to block it on First Amendment grounds.

I would strongly prefer if the CIA and FBI would not involve themselves in election messaging.
It's a bad look.
(On a good day) what they do is ugly but necessary. The sort of thing you should keep quiet about, not lean on to legitimize your other messages

Patrick Stewart's stories from DUNE are pretty great. There's a whole thing about how David Lynch was disappointed when he showed up because ... well, I won't spoil it. And then this, on his first conversation with Sting, is quite funny:
Patrick Stewart was amazing, a bygone sort of actor with working-class ethics and classical aesthetics. One of the most generally beloved men in Hollywood. Could play a nasty villain! Great actor, he will be missed. thebulwark.com/p/patrick-ste…

Here’s a story for you. We started filming without owning the title and had to do alternates.
Taft Broadcasting owned the title Ghostbusters as part of their half-hour sitcom starring Larry Storch and Forrest Tucker (F-Troop) and a gorilla chasing ghosts. I had never heard of it. They didn’t have proton packs or Bill Murray. Columbia paid $500,000 to buy the name, but they really should have paid Dean Martin, from whom I first heard the term.
In the film Scared Stiff (1953), he and Jerry Lewis (check out his acrobatic stair descent) are in an old haunted castle, and Lizabeth Scott asks Dean: “Who are you guys?” And Dean answers: “You’ve heard of Trustbusters and Gangbusters, we’re Ghostbusters!”
For my research writing the first movie, I watched every single ‘ghost’ comedy ever made. Bowery Boys, Hope and Crosby, Abbot and Costello, Martin and Lewis all did such films.
Happy Halloween 2026.

I hate the term “ratfucked” in politics. It takes something beautiful that happens between two or more rats and makes it disgusting

Patrick Stewart says he rescued two kayakers in Hawaii, and the last one recognised him mid-rescue.
“OH MY CAPTAIN PICARD!”
“He reached inside his pocket for a pen for me to sign an autograph. He let go of my hand, he slipped, he hit his head on the side of the boat and disappeared under the water.”
“It was horrible. We never saw him again.”

How Wikipedia Rewrote Zionism
Since October 2023, four-fifths of the encyclopedia’s article on Zionism has been replaced. And work of editors who have been banned from the page remains.

Any TV show that remains in development long enough will turn into a police procedural with a hot female detective and a quirky clever dude, it's the media equivalent of everything evolving into crabs.
Betting against this
Prediction time:
Fable 5.5 and Astra 6.1/6.5 were not delayed because of an IPO or safety concerns.
They were delayed because of the upcoming midterm US elections on Nov. 3rd.
The reason being that they are so powerful, so reality bending, that neither Anthropic nor OpenAI could risk blame for a society disrupting event before elections.
They are both legitimate superintelligences in every sense of the word, and undeniably so.
They will change human civilization in obvious and stark ways.
Thank goodness none of the AIs are smart
