That line “a republic, if you can keep it” has always haunted me a bit—the idea that the country’s survival is predicated on satisfying a demon clown

If, God forbid, Abdul loses, this will be a watershed moment in Democratic politics.
The fire will rise.
It's over.
People will be radicalized against corporate, pro-Israel Dems. There will be a reckoning.
If, when, he wins, it will be a watershed moment.
And that reckoning will still come.

Art: spending an hour in photoshop to remove all the cars and other clutter from a street scene so you can create a clean base for transforming it
Not art: telling an ai to spend a few seconds doing the same
Using ai in your workflow means you're not an artist

This is not a sign of imminent runaway ASI, as I made clear here. rameznaam.com/p/ai-rsi-isnt-…

More progress on the Haruhi problem! You can now watch all 14 episodes in every possible order by watching as few as 93,904,936,032 episodes, using this new construction: github.com/williamechols/sup…
This will save you a lot of time compared with the previous record of 93,905,309,790.
Before recent improvements, the best was 93,924,230,411. This is still the number given on Wikipedia.

This stuff has been his singular vision and idea since he was a teenager. It is the only thought he has ever had. ”In too deep” is a massive understatement, EY is a paperclip maximizer substituting ai doomsday cultism for paperclips.

i think we should stop treating EY as someone deserving of debate.
he's a blathering cretin, with an utterly incoherent professed world model.
compare this, for intance, with the erstwhile conditions he had for a valuable universe.

Nice going, everyone.
Alabama passed a law, 138 votes to nothing, that makes every phone user in the state prove their age before downloading a single app.
A 45-year-old who wants a news app has to hand ID to Google first. Existing accounts get no pass either. Every one of them must be verified by October 2027.
Teenagers will need a parent’s sign-off to install Wikipedia, Duolingo or a Bible app, and kids without a parent to ask get locked out completely.
Apple, Google and Amazon’s lobby group has now sued to block it on First Amendment grounds.

I would strongly prefer if the CIA and FBI would not involve themselves in election messaging.
It's a bad look.
(On a good day) what they do is ugly but necessary. The sort of thing you should keep quiet about, not lean on to legitimize your other messages

Patrick Stewart's stories from DUNE are pretty great. There's a whole thing about how David Lynch was disappointed when he showed up because ... well, I won't spoil it. And then this, on his first conversation with Sting, is quite funny:
Patrick Stewart was amazing, a bygone sort of actor with working-class ethics and classical aesthetics. One of the most generally beloved men in Hollywood. Could play a nasty villain! Great actor, he will be missed. thebulwark.com/p/patrick-ste…

Here’s a story for you. We started filming without owning the title and had to do alternates.
Taft Broadcasting owned the title Ghostbusters as part of their half-hour sitcom starring Larry Storch and Forrest Tucker (F-Troop) and a gorilla chasing ghosts. I had never heard of it. They didn’t have proton packs or Bill Murray. Columbia paid $500,000 to buy the name, but they really should have paid Dean Martin, from whom I first heard the term.
In the film Scared Stiff (1953), he and Jerry Lewis (check out his acrobatic stair descent) are in an old haunted castle, and Lizabeth Scott asks Dean: “Who are you guys?” And Dean answers: “You’ve heard of Trustbusters and Gangbusters, we’re Ghostbusters!”
For my research writing the first movie, I watched every single ‘ghost’ comedy ever made. Bowery Boys, Hope and Crosby, Abbot and Costello, Martin and Lewis all did such films.
Happy Halloween 2026.

I hate the term “ratfucked” in politics. It takes something beautiful that happens between two or more rats and makes it disgusting

“OH MY CAPTAIN PICARD!”
“He reached inside his pocket for a pen for me to sign an autograph. He let go of my hand, he slipped, he hit his head on the side of the boat and disappeared under the water.”
“It was horrible. We never saw him again.”
