We should all support Donald Tusk’s bold, brave actions in Poland. 🇵🇱 🇪🇺 🇺🇦

In my opinion, Piketty et al.'s critics have already given too much ground. They are pedantically quibbling over the top 1% share, whereas they should be asking why Piketty et al. abandoned the Gini coefficient as the principal measure of inequality to begin with. There is, moreover, a fundamental issue with how Piketty et al. treat gender by splitting incomes equally between husband and wife. Together, these methodological issues mean that the effects of the principal movement for greater equality over the past half century are largely excluded from their metrics. Feminism mattered.

Poland is under attack.
Not by its legitimate government, but by Russian proxies spreading the narrative that Tusk and the EU are staging a coup.

So, basically, 500 million Europeans expect 300 million Americans to protect them from 120 million Russians who can’t even defeat 40 million Ukrainians while those 500 million Europeans don’t even realize they are being conquered by 2 billion Muslims who claim they are being persecuted by 8 million Israelis. Is that about right?

We have a loved one scheduled to be on this flight. He will be killed if he’s returned to the Taliban. He supported the US mission in Afghanistan. He has broken no laws. He came here legally. Seeking asylum should not be a death sentence.
Breaking News: The Trump administration has detained dozens of Afghan immigrants in Louisiana — including relatives of those who helped the U.S. military — and plans to deport them to Afghanistan, according to U.S. officials. nyti.ms/4jPVvrw

One of the most uncomfortable insights from @tylercowen's interview with @chronicle: AI is exposing how much of what we teach, test, and reward is becoming obsolete.
The big threat to universities isn't going to be AI; it'll be our stubborn insistence on doing things the way we've always done them.

The attack dogs of pro-Russian, pro-MAGA and anti-EU propaganda are in full force over what is happening in Poland, portraying the PiS camp as the victim of a supposed coup.
How convenient.
Let’s remember who started this.
In 2015, PiS began dismantling Poland’s rule of law, unlawfully filling seats on the Constitutional Tribunal and bringing key judicial institutions under political influence.
For eight years, they undermined the very democratic safeguards they now claim to defend.
They lost power in 2023, but their grip on parts of the state survived. Now, as Donald Tusk’s government attempts to restore judicial independence, the same political camp cries dictatorship and presents itself as the victim.
You cannot spend eight years undermining the rule of law and then invoke it as a shield against accountability.
Poland’s democratic institutions belong to its citizens, not to a political party determined to retain power after losing an election.
Restoring the rule of law is not a coup. It is a democratic responsibility. And it must be carried out in accordance with the Constitution.

You have to watch the Lindsey Graham documentary. It’s called CLOSETocracy.
The GOP is run by these people, it’s the Pink Mafia.
Remember, Grindr goes through the roof when the RNC is in town.
Trump said he wanted to start a dating app. You already have one, it’s called Grindr.

🇪🇺🇵🇱 Tusk is right to act.
PiS, now in opposition, politicised Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal while in power.
Its leadership blocked elected judges including Maciej Taborowski, Marcin Dziurda and Anna Korwin-Piotrowska
This has nothing to do with “globalism” or nonsense designed to win likes.
Tusk backed the suspension of the tribunal’s leadership as part of efforts to restore the rule of law.
Polish citizens deserve courts that serve the law, not a political party.
Tusk is doing an admirable job, from foreign policy to the economy.
Long live a free Poland.

Economist (and Nobel laureate) Paul Krugman: “Control of Starlink must, one way or another, be taken away from Elon Musk. It’s a matter of national security: we cannot let private individuals make foreign and defense policy, and it would be totally irresponsible to leave a crucial military asset in the hands of a racist, authoritarian conspiracy theorist.”

To my MAGA friends: Enjoy this weekend. Seriously.
After Tuesday, your movement is finished. That feeling of powerlessness you remember? It’s coming back.
And you’ll spend years looking back at this moment, furious that you had power—and flushed it down Trump’s golden toilet. Never to return
