people will keep going for the most speculative assets, because they wanna make a lot of money as fast and as easily as possible.
high quality web3 products have nothing to do with that. In a bear market, when everyone’s depressed, it’s obviously more rational to allocate your attention to products with revenue. but in euphoria, nobody wants to think too hard
2020-2022: onchain was shining because it was basically the beginning. we had just started trying onchain products and it was an incredible discovery for us. then we kept unlocking more and more: nfts, defi, gamefi, metaverses, onchain ponzis, etc.
every new sector fueled the euphoria, which is why the music played so long compared to every year after
2023-2025: at first, me and most of the market tried to trade the same assets that worked last bull run: hunting new nft collections, grinding WLs, investing in gamefi, and just analyzing products the same old way.
that’s why most people faded 2 main narratives of that cycle for so long: memecoins and ai agents.
they were the complete opposite of what we got used to in 2020-2022:
We didn’t care about the team, we didn’t need the token on CEXs, we wanted the most “fair launches” possible on pumpfun, and we didn’t need a product behind the token
all of this was an answer to the problems we ended up facing with 2020-2022 projects: down-only tokens because of VCs, products that never launched, endless broken promises, “strong” teams from goldman sucks and so on
so yeah, if you invested in hyper-speculative assets in 2023-2025 the same way you did in 2020-2022, you wouldn’t have made a single cent
2026-2028: the same thing is probably happening right now. in 2023-2025 we realized our answer to the problems of 2020-2022 turned out to be complete shit too. “fair launches” stopped being fair, tokens without products aren’t interesting anymore, and we need to know the team, otherwise it could be just another vibecoded product with 95% bundle
the stocks narrative we got in late summer/early fall is just an echo of the past, something that should actually stay in the past. pretty soon we’ll all decide it was another mistake and that it’s time for a new answer
and only then will onchain, or more accurately “hyper-speculative assets”, shine again. once we figure out how to solve the problems that came up, we’ll get dozens of new shiny things, and that’s when the real risk on starts
