What’s genuinely shocking about this whole bathroom debate is seeing queer men insulting me and saying I’m spewing nonsense simply because I refuse to throw gender-nonconforming people under the bus to make cisgender people comfortable. The same society that mocks us, questions our dignity and treats our existence as a threat has somehow convinced some of you that the way to earn acceptance is to become professional bootlickers for the very people who despise us. Apparently, queer liberation is important until the person being humiliated is someone you don’t personally identify with. Then suddenly you’re the bathroom police, defending respectability politics like you’ve been appointed CEO of heterosexual approval. Some of you have internalised so much prejudice that you’ll gladly police another marginalised person just to feel acceptable to people who would still call you a disgrace behind your back. You don’t have to agree with every argument I make. But if your contribution is insults, recycled talking points and intellectual laziness, spare me the lecture. Being queer doesn’t automatically make you progressive, and sharing my sexuality doesn’t exempt you from being an absolute fool.
