#WhySeyiMakinde | Day 1: Seven Years in Oyo, Governance Receipts
Over the next 70 days, this series will examine Engr. Seyi Makinde’s record as Governor of Oyo State since May 2019. Each day will cover one area of government, with figures drawn from official records and independent assessments.
Today, we I will just show an overview📍.
1. In September 2019, 69,996 residents were enrolled with the Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHIA). By May 2026, enrolment had reached 334,587, close to five times the 2019 figure. Over the same period, 315 primary health centres across the state were renovated to standard(1 per ward), bringing basic care within reach of communities that previously had to travel to the cities.
2. Education and infrastructure show a similar pattern of improvement : Public schools in Oyo have charged no fees or levies since 29 May 2019, and more than 15,800 teachers have been recruited, with further recruitment under way. The state has also constructed and rehabilitated over 900 km of roads, many of them linking farming communities in Oke-Ogun to markets in Ibadan and Ogbomoso.
3. Independent assessments support these figures. In 2025, Kimpact Development Initiative ranked Oyo first in Nigeria for democratic governance, and Phillips Consulting’s State Performance Index rated it the best state to live in.
Over the coming weeks, we will examine each of these areas in more detail, starting tomorrow with the governor himself and how he approaches the job. (Evidences can be gotten from references in image)
