I’m reminded of Orwell’s comments about English society sleep walking into the two great wars, never thinking it could happen.
In “The Lion and the Unicorn”, Orwell discusses complacency around war and how the English society, before both World Wars, harbored a false sense of security.
“In the years when England was ruled by the Baldwin-MacDonald axis, a sort of stagnation, a kind of passivity, set in… People simply did not believe that war would come. Even in 1938, when the Spanish Civil War had been raging for two years and Hitler had begun openly to speak of conquest, war seemed to most people a nightmare that would never happen.”
Orwell’s reflection captures the widespread denial and complacency, particularly before World War Two, but it also echoes the same naive outlook people had before World War One. The sense that war was unthinkable, despite clear signs, created an eerie calm and lack of preparedness.
