Let’s wake it up because I’m tired of mfs acting like entitled readers are the only thing poisoning fandom/fanfic spaces.
When I write, it is through an intense desire to make something exist. Posting means I’m giving people the *option* to read and respond. That’s all.

Idk man, I feel downloading, sharing, public bookmarking and recommending someone's fics to other people are a form of praise just as much as a comment would be.

been writing fic for 15+ yrs and i write for me, not kudos comments shares whatever. i have fics w <100 hits and i’m having a great time 🤷🏼♀️ you’re writing for the wrong reasons and then taking it out on readers. it’s a hobby. it’s about expression, community, and fun. not numbers

You WILL burn out creatively if you place any significant value in external feedback and validation. I am not saying this as an entitled consumer, but as a fellow creative who had to learn the hard way that you must be your own stuff's biggest fan, unconditionally.

please. if youve ever read anything of mine and liked it enough to download and preserve it, know that you have a piece of me and I'm glad my words exist beyond my mind. share them as much as you like, stories only grow when they're passed on.

If anyone finds the start of the sentence "Mass reporting fan fics to an authority outside of fandom" is familiar it's because the second half of that sentence is "IS HOW AO3 GOT BANNED IN CHINA"

yes because that's a different context!! the truth is that art in the real world is shared all the time without the artists' knowing. social media is the only place where we have this specific relatoonship with art. but ao3 is NOT social media. it is an archive!

we can agree to disagree on this but i think if you apply the same thought to artists posting their art and requesting not to be reposted even with credit because they will not receive any of the engagement from it, people would view this discourse differently

for a while now i think younger fic writers have seen fanfic as a 1:1 exhange between a provider and a consumer and not community sharing. a lot of problems branch off that but that's the core mindset that is killing good fic/fandom

the problem is you all believe your opinion is objective fact and instead of providing any sort of constructive criticism ( that is rarely asked for ) you all sound like crying babies going 'wah everything should cater to my personal reading preferences' and it's insufferable.

everyone knows fanfiction is mostly written for fun, but that doesn’t mean we have to accept writing from people who barely can form a sentence + as with every “hobby”, isn’t improving your craft kind of the point? you wouldn’t applaud someone who sucks at any other art form

I think we've gotten far too comfortable treating cruelty as some kind of personality trait. why is your response to seeing something you dislike the desire to humiliate the person who made it? why does your dislike of something need to become somebody else's punishment?

a lot of you talk about critique when you mean review, because you don’t actually know what literary/writing critique actually entails. you talk about literacy crisis but you aren’t actually equipped or taught to give critique and confuse it for another form of text evaluation.
I have read published books that have gone throught editors and multiple reviews that suffer from this problem and those people are paid to write. You all are so hung up on fic authors because they are easy to access and attack. No one is forcing you to read fanfiction.

You have never read a long form fanfic that 100s of thousands of words in does more and more bad writing/plot choices to the point of making you drop it and it shows.
Absolutely insane you are trying to tell me that bad writing choices in stories have 0 to do with the authors.
