In the post-Moore era, the semiconductor industry has a new guiding principle: time-based scaling.
During her keynote at ISCAS, Huawei’s He Tingbo introduced the Tau (τ) Scaling Law — a groundbreaking framework that peers are already calling "Her’s Law" in recognition of her leadership.
As Moore’s Law faces severe physical and economic constraints, this approach offers a compelling pivot. Rather than obsessing over shrinking transistors, the new priority is compressing the time constant (τ) across every layer of the compute stack: devices, circuits, chips, and entire systems. This is the paradigm shift the industry has been waiting for.
A practical application of this is LogicFolding — vertically stacking planar circuits to cut signal delays and boost transistor density without relying exclusively on finer process nodes. The roadmap behind this is highly ambitious, targeting 1.4nm-equivalent density by 2031, with new chips utilizing this architecture slated for later this year.
For enterprise leaders across AI, telecommunications, and data centers, the strategic takeaway is clear. Future-proofing requires a shift in investment focus toward:
