By 2050, more than two billion people worldwide will be aged 60 or older. As people live longer, it is a global imperative to ensure that those additional years are lived in health, dignity and purpose.
The Western Pacific is home to one of the world's largest and fastest-growing older populations. Countries across the Region have been at the forefront of efforts to promote healthy ageing.
Under the leadership of @RD_WPRO Saia Ma’u Piukala, the Region's shared vision of Weaving Health for All, recognizes that healthy ageing cannot be achieved by the health sector alone. It requires transforming not only health and care systems, but also the communities and environments in which people live.
I welcome the forthcoming four-year collaboration between @WHOWPRO and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, with support from the Institute of Philanthropy and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. This collaboration offers an opportunity to turn evidence into action, adapt solutions to country needs, and learn from what works across the Region. #RC77

New in @NEJM: Pfizer's mRNA flu vaccine beat the standard flu shot in a phase 3 trial. 34.5% better. Statistically superior, not just noninferior.
The timing is brutal. 🧵

We thank all our partners who attended the 76th session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific in #Fiji. Their engagement, insight and commitment were truly energizing.
Ranging from NGOs and CSOs to foundations, academia and student associations, our partners connect institutions with the lived realities of our communities. They bring expertise and innovation to where it’s needed most. And help turn policies into action.
At #RCM76 this was abundantly clear.
From tackling hypertension, alcohol control and HIV to emergency preparedness, climate change and health systems resilience – our partners helped keep our discussions grounded in reality.
Because only through partnerships in health can we truly achieve #HealthForAll.

Honoured to meet with the Institute of Philanthropy to explore new ways to advance #HealthForAll through Asian philanthropy.
Grateful for the Institute's support to the #WHOInvestmentRound and for having shared priorities in primary health care, emergencies, immunization and climate-health across our @WHOEMRO Region.

A privilege for IoP and HKJC Charities Trust to contribute to the regional and global health agenda, particularly at the nexus of immunisation and emergencies. @WHOWPRO under the leadership of @RD_WPRO has been a true partner advancing our common causes for the people’s health
To achieve #HealthForAll we need long-term partnerships and strategic, far-sighted investments in #HealthForAll!
We at the @WHO Western Pacific Regional Office are truly grateful to the Institute of Philanthropy under Director Gabriel Leung @gmleunghku for their generous current support to our critical work in tackling non-communicable diseases and strengthening health emergency preparedness & response.
Our meeting in Hong Kong today - against the backdrop of this week’s @avpn_asia Global Conference - touched upon the urgency of addressing the resurgence of measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases in the Region, amid dangerous funding gaps in immunization.
We also discussed the need to strategize on regional mega-trends - including rapid population ageing - and their impact on health across the life-cycle.
I thanked IoP as well for their invaluable support in helping @WHOWPRO navigate the philanthropy landscape in Asia-Pacific, where more and more foundations and private sector entities are stepping up to support health and sustainable development. 🙏

Just out at NEJM - our report with @arnold_monto and other collaborators on the CENTERSTONE trial nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NE… provides the first robust evidence that an influenza antiviral treatment (baloxavir marboxil) can curb the spread of influenza within households. This double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial enrolled 1,457 influenza-positive index cases and 2,681 household contacts across 15 countries from 2019 to 2024. The index cases, aged 5 to 64 years, were assigned to receive either baloxavir or a placebo within 48 hours of symptom onset. The primary endpoint was laboratory-confirmed influenza transmission to household contacts by day 5. Treatment with baloxavir reduced the odds of untreated household members contracting the virus by 32%.

CDC confirms first severe case of H5N1 Bird Flu in the U.S. While an investigation into the source of the infection is ongoing, it has been determined that the patient had exposure to sick and dead birds in backyard flocks.
No person-to-person spread of H5 bird flu has been detected. This case does not change CDC’s overall assessment of the immediate risk to the public’s health from H5N1 bird flu, which remains low.
