The sixth Indian National Groundwater Conference (INGWC-2026) began at Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad on Friday with experts calling for scientific, interdisciplinary and community-based approaches to groundwater management under changing climate conditions. The conference, on “Groundwater Utilization – Issues & Challenges under Climate Change Scenarios,” is being organised by the Departments of Civil Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, and Mathematics and Computing, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, in association with the Association of Global Groundwater Scientists (AGGS). The inaugural function was held at GJLT in the presence of chief guest Prof. (Dr.)Ram Kumar Singh, Vice-Chancellor, BBMKU. Prof. M K Singh, Dean (Faculty) and Director-in-Charge, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and Co-Chairman, Organizing Committee, INGWC-2026, is among the key members of the organising committee. Others present included Prof. Chennimalai Mayilswami, President, AGGS; Prof. Brijesh Kumar Yadav, Secretary, AGGS, IIT Roorkee; Prof. Rajib Sarkar, Head, Dept. of Civil Engineering; Prof. Alok-Sinha, HoD, Environmental Science and Engineering; Prof. SP Tiwari, Head, Dept. of Mathematics and Computing; and Prof. Renu V, Organising Secretary, INGWC-2026. The inaugural programme also witnessed AGGS honours. Prof. Mritunjay Kumar Singh, Dean, Faculty, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad) and Prof. Ashok K Kesari, (IIT Delhi) received the Distinguished Fellow Award; Dr. Shivendra Nath Rai (Retired Chief Scientist, CSIR-NGRI, Hyderabad) and Prof. T.I. Eldho (IIT Bombay) received the Lifetime Achievement Award; while Prof. Indumathi M. Nambi (IIT Madras), Prof. R. Selvakumar (PSGIAS, Coimbatore), Prof. Bellie Sivakumar (IIT Bombay) and Prof. D. Suresh Kumar (Director, CARDS, TNAU, Coimbatore) were honoured with the Fellow AGGS Award. Some honours were received personally, some through representatives, while a few will be presented during the concluding day.

The Department of Mining Engineering, @IITISM_DHANBAD launched a new M.Tech programme in "Mining of Critical Minerals" from the academic session 2026-27. As global demand for lithium, cobalt, rare earth elements, and other strategic minerals intensifies, this programme is designed to build specialised expertise in the exploration, extraction, processing, and sustainable management of critical mineral resources — aligned with national priorities in resource security and self-reliance.
