Kenya’s public debt has jumped by 358% in just over a decade. The real question is not just how much we owe, it’s how borrowing decisions are made, how funds are used, and whether there is accountability at the project and transaction level.
Yesterday, we held a CSO Peer-to-Peer Engagement to discuss key findings from a public debt accountability study examining Kenya’s borrowing and debt management processes.
Rather than focusing only on the size of the debt, the study looks at accountability across the entire financing lifecycle, from project appraisal and the choice of financing instruments, through borrowing, disbursement and implementation, to debt servicing and repayment.
These findings provide an evidence base for strengthening public participation, monitoring borrowing decisions, following the use of debt-financed resources and engaging oversight institutions on public debt accountability.
The engagement also sought to strengthen civil society coordination, evidence-based advocacy and institutional accountability on public debt, fiscal justice and public finance governance in Kenya.

Africa’s transformation begins with self‑determination. This was proven by @ipf_global’s Global Partnerships personnel, Ms. @RuthKendagor1 whose reflections on the continent’s evolution from demanding change to driving it stands as a powerful reminder that sustainable progress starts when Africans lead the process.

Institutions don't rebuild trust by talking about it; they rebuild it by showing up. Today, the private sector shows up.
When we say "private sector," we mean the full range of it: banking and finance, manufacturing, trade associations, professional bodies, and the businesses that keep Kenya's economy moving.
On the agenda today: Trust as an Economic Asset, Trust and Regional Economic Cooperation, Understanding the trust landscape & gaps, and how institutional trust drives investment and lowers the cost of capital.
Follow the Roundtable's updates on our pages today.

Why a Rules-Based International Order is the Foundation of Global Trust
Every country, business, and person depends on the same thing: rules everyone agrees to follow. When those rules hold, people invest with confidence, trade flows, and countries work together on shared problems like climate change and disease outbreaks. When they weaken, none of that comes easily. This think piece falls under one of our summit's pillars, the Future of Multilateralism & International Cooperation, and examines why it matters.
For Africa specifically, when trust in the system is low, it costs real money: higher interest rates and more expensive loans, even for countries doing the right things.

During the ongoing Fifth Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on the United Nations Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation, KHRC submitted proposals on Article 6, which addresses the effective taxation of high-net-worth individuals.
The proposals urge countries to work together to stop tax avoidance and evasion by the wealthy. Together with the African Civil Society Working Group on the UN Tax Convention, we are pushing for more transparency around how the rich hide and move their money, as well as joint efforts to tax them, while still allowing each country to decide its own tax policies.

Our co-convener, @StrathU, has published a new think paper drawing on @SingoeiAKorir 's remarks at the Regulatory Institutions Consultative Breakfast, and it lands on a question worth sitting with: can there be enduring trust without enduring rules?
It makes a case worth reading: that the rules-based international order isn't a distant diplomatic construct, but the thing that makes everyday institutional trust possible; from the safety of medicines to the credibility of a financial licence.

Fair tax systems are fundamental to reducing inequality and building resilient societies.
Speaking during the opening session of the Kenyan Civil Society Learning, Strategy and Policy Dialogue workshop on the UN Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation (UN Tax Convention), @oxfamkenya Executive Director Mr. Mwongera Mutiga highlighted the critical role of tax justice in mobilising resources for inclusive development and ensuring that economic growth benefits everyone.
"This conversation is fundamentally about inequality. Tax justice is not just about collecting more revenue; it's about fairness. It's about ensuring that those who have benefited the most from the economy contribute their fair share, so governments have the resources to invest in quality public services and build a society where no one is left behind."
