MATTER OF GREAT PRIDE FOR INDIAN SCIENCE!
Ashoke Sen becomes the first Indian to win the prestigious Oskar Klein Medal (2026), jointly awarded by Stockholm University and the Nobel Committee for Physics of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for his pioneering work in String theory.
deccanherald.com/science/ben…
String theory gives a unified description of all matter and the forces between them based on the postulate that the elementary constituents of matter are tiny one dimensional (string-like) objects instead of point particles. Sen’s breakthrough work has shown that multiple string theories are all different versions of a single underlying theory.
Incidentally, I met Ashok Sen for the first time, when both of us were elected as FRS (Fellows of Royal Society) in 1998. Ashoke ( nominated by Stephen Hawking himself) was young 42 yrs and
I was an oldie - 55 yrs though!
What struck me was Ashoke’s incredible simplicity. His wife Sumathi Rao has reportedly said that Ashoke bought his first suit and needed some assistance to wear his first tie for that prestigious 1998 FRS ceremony in London, when one signs in the same book that Sir Isaac Newton has signed.
A film made on the life and work of Ashoke Sen, when we at the
H K Firodia Award in Science & Technology honoured him in 2005 in Pune, will inspire all our budding scientists - showing how science & simplicity goes together.

We all feel so so proud Ashoke!

Remembering Prof. G. N. Ramachandran on his 104th birth anniversary
A pioneer of structural biology, he proposed the triple-helix structure of collagen and co-developed the Ramachandran Plot, which is still used worldwide to understand and validate protein structures.
His work laid the foundation for molecular biophysics in India and continues to shape modern biology and drug discovery.
Celebrating a visionary who changed how we see the molecules of life.

I am deeply honoured to have been conferred the prestigious Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Award 2026 by the Government of Tamil Nadu on the occasion of Independence Day.
The name of this award makes this honour particularly special to me. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has always been one of my greatest icons and an inspiration to me and millions of Indians. His vision, humility and dedication to our nation continue to inspire generations.
As I am travelling today, I was unable to be present in person. I am deeply grateful that my daughter, Dr. R. M. Anjana, received the award on my behalf from the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru. C. Joseph Vijay, in the presence of other distinguished dignitaries.

The 10-year follow-up findings from the landmark Trivandrum Heart Failure Registry (THFR) are now published in the Journal of Cardiac Failure.
📌Heart failure in India strikes a decade earlier and carries a massive mortality burden.
📌Closing the implementation gap for guideline directed medical therapy and expanding access to affordable devices are urgent system level priorities.

Every time his mother sat down at her sewing machine, she was doing more than earning a living.
She was funding a dream.
A dream that has now helped her son, Jigar Nayak from Odisha, secure AIR 5474 in JEE Advanced 2026 and move closer to becoming the first IITian from his village.
Jigar's journey was anything but easy. In 2020, he lost his father to cancer, and the family was left struggling after exhausting its savings on treatment.
Refusing to let hardship dictate her children's future, his mother, Apoorva Nayak, mortgaged her jewellery and took up tailoring work to keep them in school.
Inspired by videos about IIT and JEE during his school years, Jigar worked relentlessly towards his goal.
Today, his success is not just a rank. It is a tribute to a mother's sacrifices, resilience and unwavering belief in her son.
And for Jigar, this achievement is only the beginning.
“I’m not working hard just for myself. I want to end my mother’s struggles and make sure my younger brother completes his education without facing any difficulties,” he said, as reported by TBI Marathi.

What’s driving the clusters? Network analysis shows a dominant cardio-metabolic-renal hub. Hypertension (50.8%), diabetes (32.2%), and CKD (22.6%) are the most common NCDs, often linking with anemia to create complex health challenges.
The takeaway: We need to move beyond single-disease silos. The findings call for integrated primary care, targeted screening for abdominal obesity/BMI risks, and culturally tailored interventions for Indigenous populations. 🌿⚕️
