OpenAI models helped researchersโoperating as part of our Patch the Planet initiativeโdiscover critical security flaws in PHP, an open-source programming language used to run an estimated 70% of websites.
Over the past two months, we led a coalition of maintainers, researchers, and security providers to prepare fixes and protections ahead of disclosure. This duration was necessary because the fix was quite intricate and required a major change to the PHP engine. Every site using PHP can now safely upgrade their version to stay secure, in addition to applying mitigations from various security vendors.
Due to the severity of these flaws and PHPโs widespread use, we consider this bug to be one of the most impactful vulnerabilities in recent memory. It also marks a new phase, where AI can find security bugs with internet-scale impact.
This is an example of the Defenderโs Window in action: to our knowledge, frontier AI was able to find this vulnerability ahead of attackers, giving defenders time to prepare.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a real relationship with a real person. It is a boundaried attachment experience which the therapeutic contract demands we observe with excruciating honesty. It must happen between two sentient beings that are capable of emotions and especially shame. The therapists unique responsibility is to bring a reflective function to that relationship (whether the client has that reflective function or not), and that reflective function comes from learning to lovingly tolerate shame.
Nothing you can get from an AI will provide what I wrote above, although AI can help with other aspects of therapy such as frame-shifting, psychoeducation, and identifying cognitive distortions.
This is why I think AI will replace (already is replacing) therapies such as CBT and many other "evidence based" therapies, but it cannot replace psychodyhamic relational psychotherapy. โ at Islington, London

Some of my history of plague books, background for my forthcoming book on Texas epidemics @mitpress. Glad to tell the story of how plague rose out of the Central Asian steppes (a bit west of present day Irkutsk) and then to Crimea and the Black Sea where the Mongol-Genoese clashes ultimately introduced plague into Messina, Marseille, and Constantinople to ignite the Black Death in Europe 1346-53

Itโs not about 35 orange men getting down the Garvaghy Road, itโs about what it stands for. It brought this place close to civil war in the 90โs and resulted in over 20 murders.
It was brought to a close for a reason.

Imagine wanting to ascert supremacy over the garvaghy road community so badly, that you'll damage one of the most successful peace processes in the world, just to walk down a road where you're not wanted. I fear this will do irreparable damage us all.
