This is an astounding revelation. The root cause of the failed state across Africa is patronage politics which inevitably leads to "state capture" by the ruling party. It has been openly unfolding for 25 years and the New York Times hasn't mentioned it once. Do Better!

🇿🇦 🇺🇸 South Africa President says Trump's a Bully‼️
🇺🇸 🇿🇦 SPECIAL REPORT | RAMAPHOSA PREPARES RESPONSE TO TRUMP’S FIVE DEMANDS AS US–SA RELATIONS FACE CRITICAL TEST‼️ President Cyril Ramaphosa is preparing a formal response to five demands from US President Donald Trump that could have significant consequences for South Africa’s political and economic relationship with Washington. US Ambassador Leo Brent Bozell III formally delivered the demands to Ramaphosa in Pretoria on 26 August 2026. Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya has confirmed that Ramaphosa will provide a “timely” response, although no specific deadline has been announced. THE FIVE US DEMANDS Washington wants South Africa to: ▪️ Prioritise the protection of farmers from violent attacks. ▪️ Condemn the “Kill the Boer” chant as hate speech. ▪️ Abandon legislation allowing expropriation without compensation. ▪️ Remove the 30% B-BBEE ownership requirement affecting US investors. ▪️ Demonstrate genuine non-alignment by distancing itself from US adversaries, including Iran. Pretoria believes progress has already been made on several of these issues, and Ramaphosa is expected to emphasise this when he formally responds. WHY THE RESPONSE MATTERS The dispute extends well beyond diplomatic disagreements. South Africa’s relationship with Washington has come under increasing pressure over trade, foreign policy, transformation legislation and domestic political issues. Potentially at stake are US assistance to South Africa, the country's continued access to preferential trade benefits under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), investment relations and the broader strategic relationship between Pretoria and Washington. South Africa’s new ambassador to the United States, Roelf Meyer, has indicated that addressing the five demands will be among his priorities, saying the government will examine how the two countries can “manoeuvre” towards mutually acceptable positions. HOW THE DISPUTE DEVELOPED The five issues reportedly emerged during bilateral trade discussions around September 2025. However, South Africa maintained that Washington had not initially presented them as a formal written list of demands. The dispute became more public in March 2026 when Bozell outlined the issues at the BizNews Conference in Hermanus and complained that Washington had been waiting almost a year for a response. “The US is running out of patience,” he said. Tensions escalated further after Bozell rejected South African court findings concerning the “Kill the Boer” chant, declaring: “I don’t care what your courts say, it’s hate speech.” South Africa summoned the ambassador over what it described as undiplomatic remarks. Bozell subsequently clarified that the statement represented his personal view and said the US government respected the independence and findings of South Africa’s judiciary. The diplomatic process entered a new phase on 26 August when Bozell formally handed Trump’s written communication to Ramaphosa in Pretoria. The Presidency has now committed to responding. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT Ramaphosa’s reply will be closely watched in both Pretoria and Washington. The challenge for South Africa will be to protect its domestic policy positions and foreign-policy independence while attempting to stabilise relations with one of its most important trading partners. The five demands therefore represent more than another diplomatic disagreement. Ramaphosa’s response could help determine the direction of US–South Africa relations — from trade and investment to foreign policy and diplomatic cooperation — for years to come. #BreakTheSilenceAboutSouthAfrica
