MICCAI recap from Strasbourg! 🇫🇷 We hosted the ORena challenge for intraop foreign body identification with AI. 3 teams beat out all frontier models by 20% 🚀 I talked about “going to the Gemba” ie you must go down to the factory floor (see the data) to fully understand AI models

What defined progress in clinical AI in 2026?
New in @NEJM_AI, we describe: a shift to rigorous evaluation w uneven results, consumer tools outpacing evidence, & AI that boosts clinicians in its presence but deskills them in its absence.
Thanks to @Jean_J_Feng & all coauthors!
So fun to ask all of the attendees if they think medical AGI is here and loved interviewing @jonc101x …is AI here to stay, or an illusory magic trick? 💭
Recap from our last Stanford @ariseainetwork x SWAT (Surgeons Writing About Trauma) mixer -
One fun question we asked everyone: "Is medical AGI here?" 🎥 Watch what the room said, including remarks from @jonc101x
Shout-out @lap_chloe, Anson Zhou, @akiranishii3 for co-hosting and Ali Al Fairs for the excellent editing.
One takeaway from me is that although the world is a big place it's actually small in its own way too- we're all so interconnected both as medical colleagues and research collaborators - which is why communing is so important!
IMO as AI becomes more SI (lol), human relationships are even more important.
Stay tuned for our next event!

The users of @OpenEvidence skew heavy toward IM and FM. Radiology is substantially underrepresented. The most common queries are about treatment/management, not diagnosis.

Extremely excited to have been a part of this incredible work on improving how medical urgency is operationalized in US heart transplantation. Please check out our new paper in @JAMA_current! @gracelyden @Nikhil15 @KiranKhush1 @WF_Parker @StanfordSurgery @OpNotes
A new #HeartTransplant allocation score, the US Candidate Risk Score, demonstrated better discrimination of 6-week mortality among adult US transplant candidates than the current 6-status system.
In match-run simulations, reordering candidates by this score prioritized patients with higher observed mortality without transplant while not increasing donor-candidate distance.
This finding supports use of more objective medical urgency criteria in US donor heart allocation policy.

Great learning experience to be the Exec Medical Advisor, organizing 63 clinician annotators (med students to attendings) who created 763,000 ground truth annotations across 350 surgical videos. We believe this will become the largest surgical video dataset available for research

Marked improvements in patient safety have stalled, checklists and antibiotics don’t move the needle anymore 💭

@OpNotes @maryhawn @TGrantcharovMD
What happens when the entire OR team can learn from the same view of a surgical event?
A new article published in Surgery highlights why that visibility matters: one cited study found that surgical-site confirmation was reported as completed 95% of the time, but observed just 70% of the time.
That gap shows the opportunity to better understand how safety practices happen in everyday care.
At @StanfordHealth, multidisciplinary video review brought surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, sterile processing staff, and leadership together to learn from surgical events. Every one of the six sessions described led to a policy being created or changed.
“Aimbient Intelligence Platforms and New Frontiers in Surgical Safety,” by Dr. @lap_chloe, Dr. @maryhawn, and Dr. @TGrantcharovMD, explores how ambient data capture can help teams identify hidden safety threats and turn shared learning into concrete action.

just landed from DC ✈️ Strasbourg for #MICCAI26 and ofc made it just in time for the gala! my research question for the day—who likes dancing more, the surgeons or computer scientists? 💭
incredible take on how AI can push the capabilities of human performance in surgery !!
Replying to @TomVargheseJr
One of my central messages from today’s Gibbon Lecture:
🔸Capability is not enough.
🔸AI is giving us extraordinary new capabilities in surgery and healthcare.
What matters now is what we choose to build with them; and whether they ultimately improve the care of our patients.

I didn’t think it was possible to discuss performance athletes, cardio-pulmonary bypass and AI in one talk over 30 minutes but @TomVargheseJr did it 🙌🏻

Truly an incredible first @ASTRO_org meeting! Loved presenting our work on pre-op APBI and immune remodeling in ER+ breast cancer. So grateful to @carmenbergom & @MCWRORes for the opportunity!
And Ofcourse, so special to catch up with my undergrad mentor @KimpleRandall!

Great to see growing number of surgical AI "base camps" around the world!
That’s a wrap at #ACSCC26! Thank you to ACS for allowing me to serve in a Session Faculty role for an inaugural hands-on AI for Surgeons course. We went from zero prior AI experience to vibe-coding a bespoke website and building CV models. Now off to Strasbourg for MICCAI!! 🚀

Wanted to shout-out Akira's work in the MMBU Challenge! Cool competition to train VLMs to crack the perception bottleneck in biomedical AI. Consider signing up!
Frontier vision-language models can give convincing answers to biomedical questions—yet they often can’t tell what they’re looking at.
The MMBU benchmark at #ECCV26 showed this clearly: models frequently get the answer right while failing to identify the modality, body part, or stain.
Now, we’re challenging teams to tackle this perception bottleneck in biomedical AI.
3 tracks. $100K+ in compute and prizes. Oct 1–Dec 31.
📅 Good news: registration has been extended through September 30, so there’s still time to join!
Thanks to @gxl_ai, @AnthropicAI, @StanfordAILab, @na2uqi, and @biohub for supporting the challenge!
