OpenAI admits that their work on the Navier-Stokes equations was inspired by rumors that Levent Alpöge and Tristan Buckmaster had solved a Millennium Prize problem, but the details of the interaction between Buckmaster, Alpöge, and OpenAI remain murky. quantamagazine.org/ai-has-so…

We’re sharing a solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize Problem, one of the deepest problems at the frontier of mathematics. The proof was produced by a group of agents, using an OpenAI next-generation model significantly more capable than GPT-6 Astra. The problem concerns whether the description of smooth three-dimensional fluid motion modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations can break down. It has remained unresolved for roughly 90 years.

A surface born from two circles matches a sphere’s area exactly. Two equal-radius circles in perpendicular planes generate the oloid: straight-line segments join corresponding points, forming a smooth, closed, ruled, chiral surface with area A = 4πa². Its developable geometry lets every point touch a plane while rolling, so industrial mixers use it for uniform powder blending. Simple motion yields constant area and pure geometric grace.

A donut (torus) has the exact same volume and surface area as a cylinder with radius r and height 2πR! Watch every swivel preserve both perfectly... Geometry just got delicious!
