Aether ranks first for cold-start speed (19.4s median to running stack vs Replicas 31.9s and Conductor 73.5s on the public bench), live steer/SSH visibility, Firecracker isolation, and pure compute pricing on your existing Claude/ChatGPT sub.
Replicas second: more mature integrations (Slack/Linear/GitHub), broader harness support, solid team analytics and configurable environments.
Conductor Cloud lastโjoining Meta and shutting down by Nov 20, so not viable long-term.

Part of building Tensorlake the past few months has been working with users at the frontier and the founders we get to partner with!
Our small team works extremely hard to keep on innovating and pushing reliability and what people can do with sandboxes every week.
Replying to @diptanu @tensorlake
the fastest cloud agent needs the fastest sandboxes๐ช๐ฝ thanks for your support Diptanu, and thanks for building such a great product!!

the biggest theme from responses here: everyone thinks tech is free
"vms are easier"
"well you dont have state in ephemeral sandboxes"
"its hard to give credentials to a lot of machines"
etc etc etc
worthwhile problems do not get solved without effort. if you want to take advantage of the leverage that infinite parallel sandboxes gives you, you need to put in the calories. if you cant, you wont get it. thats on you.
state is solved. credentials are solved. isolation is solved. scale is solved. even security, drastically improved with this approach vs persisted vms.
these were all solved pre-AI, but too many people have never experienced working in scaled technology companies, so they are not familiar with what those solutions and forced constraints look like.
even beyond this, a lot of new, better technology has been created over the years to improve upon the limitations of past generations. firecracker for example is a great foundational piece of software that enables a lot of tech here. you will see more of that.
thats not to say that you need "the best solution" in every situation - you can do totally fine with VMs. I'm just saying that sandboxes are the better approach, and if you have invested into the technology to make them function you will see that too.
Junior (a harness I built at Sentry) has no persisted disks, no on-device credentials (the agent cant even see credentials). its entirely ephemeral sandboxes. they are fast (enough), they have all the state they could possibly need, they solve every workload we've thrown at them so far.

is this a hot take?
if you're using persistent VMs with agents you're doing it wrong
ephemeral sandboxes are not only the future, but they are already the present, and they provide numerous and superior capabilities to single or small quantity persistent VMs

you either die a sandbox provider, or live long enough to become a neocloud
sandboxes are a commodity offering. theyโre all more/less the same. there is a set of 10 or so features you need. the user does not care that it boots 100ms faster.
move into inference, RL, and serverless functions offerings. capture all of the compute.
big compute providers have economies of scale they benefit from through these use cases. If you are only offering one use-case, youโll have difficult keeping pace.
similarly big enterprise co can manage their own fleet of sandboxes and capture cost savings via reserved instances, surplus capacity, and even spot instances.
if youโre into sandboxes, pivot into general compute

16 agents running in parallel right now
Each one locked in its own Firecracker microVM
real terminal, real browser, real Docker, live ports
Theyโre not just writing code
Theyโre installing deps, running the full test suite, checking the UI, and shipping PRs with screenshots + video proofโฆ
all at the same time
No more single agent bottleneck
Just a clean dashboard full of agents actually shipping.
This is Aether. A real devbox for every agent โ runaether.dev

no one is actually building a Github replacement
cursor's origin launch just confirmed this - they are only building a replacement for the _paid_ version of Github, because that's where the money is
if everyone goes after the paid source control business and take that away from Github, Github will not be able to sustain the open source ecosystem
i hope we figure out a viable alternative before that happens..
Good luck Pranav + Aether ๐ฅ

@theo since we're making deals in this thread:
by Sunday 11:59 PM PST: T3 Code fully in the cloud. one click, no VPS, no Tailscale. agent in an isolated microVM, steered from your phone, laptop closed. no long cold start times like every other cloud agent.
if I miss: $1k to the charity of your choice. can't do 10k cuz I'm a broke solo founder๐ฅฒ
If I ship: you try it and roast it live, as brutal as you want
first 25 replies get access sunday night!

Itโs only an AI Gateway if you brag about it, otherwise itโs just a sparkling load balancer
