BMC already receives this data. The rules are already written. The penalty is already defined. Our questions to @mybmc : How many Show Cause or Stop Work notices have been issued under this circular? Will site-wise calibration reports be made public? Will Command Centre data be opened to citizens? By what date will faulty monitors be replaced? We're asking because we checked. From March to May, and again in September and October, we stood outside construction sites in Bandra and Khar. We photographed their AQI boards, logged every reading and set them against official station data. Then we wrote to the Chief Minister. What we found: boards showing zero, boards stuck on the same number for days, and readings with no relation to the dust in the air. A monitor that shows zero isn't monitoring. It's decoration. The board said the air was clean. The air said otherwise. For 38 days, we watched the AQI displays outside construction sites in Bandra and Khar. 230 readings later, a pattern emerged: zeros, dashes, question marks. We checked them against official station readings and the US Consulate's monitors. The construction-site boards consistently came in lower. On April 24, a board near Pali Hill told passers-by there was no PM2.5 and no PM10 at all. Next to a construction site. These screens exist for one reason: to warn the people breathing that air. When they're wrong, mothers send kids out to play and the elderly go for their walk, trusting a number that means nothing. Not everyone on the route is part of the procession. Someone is trying to sleep, someone is recovering from illness, someone has an exam tomorrow, and someone’s child is covering their ears. During the Devi visarjan, we allege, noise went past the legal limit, and firecrackers, loudspeakers and lasers were used in public spaces despite the High Court’s restrictions. The celebration may last a few hours, but the people who live beside the route are exposed to it for far longer. We have written to @CMOMaharashtra asking for action against those who break the rules. Devotion doesn’t need a hundred decibels. On September 26, September 28 and October 13, we wrote to the Chief Minister about loudspeakers, firecrackers and laser lights during the Ganpati festival. Last night, we wrote again, this time about Devi visarjan. Our readings reached 110.8 dB(A) in Mahim. In Dadar West we noted firecracker smoke, and at Haji Ali lasers swept across homes and traffic. Many of these events happen in front of the police, and we saw no decibel meters at any of the sites. The High Court has already banned firecrackers in public spaces and told the police to measure noise and act. Awaaz Foundation's tests found toxic heavy metals in firecrackers, including those sold as "green". The label guarantees nothing, least of all when the authorities aren't enforcing the rules. Every festival adds to the load. Firecracker smoke, noise, loudspeakers, lasers and floodlights arrive together, and the city's air gets no time to recover before the next celebration begins. This week the Bombay High Court observed that Mumbai's pollution is surpassing Delhi's, and it has summoned the BMC, MPCB and police chiefs on Oct 26. The festivals aren't over. Diwali is still ahead, followed by Christmas and New Year. If we don't act now, the air will only get worse, until it begins to harm our health. Children, the elderly and anyone with a breathing problem will pay first. We can celebrate without poisoning the city. Say no to firecrackers, report illegal sales and demand enforcement. A single Devi visarjan procession can pollute your ears, your eyes and your lungs at the same time. On the night of October 20, Mahim reached 110.8 dB(A) at 8.51 pm. Dadar West, Prabhadevi and Cuffe Parade also recorded loud readings between 82 and 103 dB(A), from firecrackers and horn-type loudspeakers. The Bombay High Court has banned firecrackers on roads and footpaths during festivals in 2026, and has asked the police to measure noise and act. I have written to CM Devendra Fadnavis seeking action against violators. More festivals are coming.
