Funny to see the United CEO say “stop outsourcing their thinking to surveys” before most tech CEOs do.
MBA coded behavior that’s subsumed tech the last decade with maybe Apple and Snap as the exception.
Tomorrow on Cheeky Pint: Scott Kirby from @United breaks down the airline business for @benthompson and me: how they play the gate/slot contest, Starlink changing their competitive dynamics, and how everyone needs to stop outsourcing their thinking to surveys.
Great episode. Still reminded of @gruber take a few weeks back that the Duo is an entirely new product category for Apple. It’s not an iPhone and his review reinforces that.
Are data centers banned like housing or banned like fentanyl?
Today I signed the data center moratorium legislation.
San Francisco is the national leader in innovation, and that innovation is one important driver of our city’s recovery. We can never take that position for granted. As our city recovers, our administration is working to deliver a recovery that reaches every family and truly supports our communities.
Over the next 45 days, alongside departments and the Board of Supervisors, we will continue the work our administration has already started to develop a thoughtful, responsible framework that allows for the technology infrastructure our hospitals, office buildings, academic institutions, and government rely on while prioritizing community needs, keeping electricity rates low, and protecting the clean water and air our residents deserve.

Last year I thought Threads was an existential risk to X.
When Meta puts its full weight behind something -- by injecting the app into Instagram, it’s DEFCON 5:
You have to squeeze out every last drop of growth from all available surfaces to save the app.
However, I started to realize that the opposite was happening:
It was strengthening X.
If you look at any announcement by Zuck, you will see the most rude & toxic comments on the internet.
But when he makes those same announcements on X, people are thrilled about how he’s pushing humanity forward. X is a place where people are excited about the future, so it’s no surprise he and his top lieutenants are using it more than their own app.
Threads — and Bluesky — have effectively quarantined some of the worst people on the internet.
And so I had an epiphany: those apps are X’s anti-abuse systems.
Rocket science!

Still thinking about this incredible tweet
We discovered a sophisticated recording device that was hidden inside one of our offices. We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier. We referred the matter to the FBI, and we’re grateful to the agents and prosecutors who moved quickly to make an arrest. The FBI’s investigation is ongoing and we will continue to support their work.
At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data. The employee was terminated.
We take protecting our technology, data, and people seriously, and as a matter of national importance. Our security program is designed to protect against a wide range of threat actors, from insider risks to cybercriminals to nation states, and this case is an example of how AI can help address these sophisticated security threats.
This is product seems to be front running the existence of products that are not available yet, especially when wall mounted. Can Apple make a home security system so it can be an alarm keypad? A control center so you can see the whole layout and turn things on/off?
We’re so close and all seeing the same thing.
The wall mount is to me, is what really excels from an interaction design perspective.
Yes the industrial design…yes the Liquid Glass UI… but now.
Apple has created the real integrated touch point to the home. The Mission Control. And beautifully.
The same way Nest did, all those years ago (by the goat @tfadell)
Now we will see the magic flow!
Nice to see Apple bloggers coming back to X, definitely been a noticeable void for me.
I’m sure this one won’t make anyone angry. (But probably not here.)

Had to go back and check the date on this. 8.5 years later, we’re finally getting smart home devices from Apple even if it’s “second party”. Leaves hope first party will come one day.
Replying to @neilcybart
What is the Apple story on home automation? Will they leave it to HomeKit or make their own HW? They have a lot of pieces touchID/faceID (auth), W/T series chips (syncing/security) ready to go. Curious to hear your thoughts on it!
There’s a lot of discourse around why civil institutions have decayed and I actually think it’s pretty simple: smart people got complacent about local politics and stopped being involved. We’re now run by morons.
It’s called civil *duty* for a reason.
