An important essay by David Armitage, reflecting on the intellectual roots of his landmark book, The Ideological Origins of the British Empire (2000), published 25 years ago. He reconstructs and reconsiders his own contribution and arguments and the scholarship that was produced on the subject since its original publication. It was an inspirational book for me when I started to work on imperial ideologies in the history and theory of International law in the Americas back in 2007. Really worth reading! tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.…

I keep telling myself one of these years I shall learn how to say no. It is quite clear that 2026 has NOT been that year.

In Boston, Jaylen Brown was perceived by many as the Robin to Jayson Tatum’s Batman. In truth, though, they became interchangeable depending on the situation. They were the Jays, the dynamic duo. But what happens when Robin wants to be Batman? nytimes.com/athletic/7727460…

Walter Koenig made Star Trek history w/his voice cameo in the 2023 series finale of "Picard." He didn't appear as Pavel Chekov; but rather President Anton Chekov, leader of the United Federation of Planets; the son of his original character. The name was a tribute to Anton Yelchin, who'd died in 2016 and had played Chekov in the JJ Abrams films. This made Walter the last of the original cast to appear in a Star Trek series.

⭕️ President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has overtaken Flávio Bolsonaro in Brazil's runoff count. With 59.77% of polling stations reporting, Lula has 50.52% of valid votes to Bolsonaro's 49.48%, a lead of about 766,000 votes, according to Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE). Stations vary in size, so that share is not the same as the share of votes counted.
🇧🇷 Flávio Bolsonaro holds a narrow early lead over President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil's runoff. With 36.22% of polling stations reporting, he has 50.33% of valid votes to Lula's 49.67%, a margin of about 290,000 votes, according to Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE). Stations vary in size, so that share is not the same as the share of votes counted. The count resumed after Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin extended voting by two hours over bus shortages in at least nine states. Early results can swing. In the 2022 runoff, Jair Bolsonaro led for most of the night before Lula overtook him late in the count.
