Genomic sequencing shows that the Ebola virus from Nigeriaâs recently reported only imported case is highly similar to that from Kenyaâs @MOH_Kenya reported first imported case, differing by only one mutation.
My thanks to the sequencing teams at @NCDCgov and the Institute of Genomics and Global Health @RedeemersUni , Ede, and to @christian_happi for this excellent work.
We are forging ahead with public health control measures while awaiting results of further investigations and testing.
Our approach is that of solidarity and global cooperation, appreciating the role our sister African nations, @AfricaCDC, Technical partners and experts @WHO, @DrTedros, @Dr_JeanKaseya, Prof. Aliko Ahmed @alikothe3rd, @Fmohnigeria as well key International partners especially The Bureau of Global Health Security and Diplomacy (GHSD) @StateDept.
We are determined to do our best to protect the lives and livelihoods of our people and we urge all Nigerians and our partners to work together with us. By the grace of we shall succeed and rise above this public health emergency as we did in 2014.

Can we track how the virus is spreading in the Ebola outbreak in DR Congo? Claude Science is providing bioinformatics support to scientists at @inrb_kinshasa responding to one of the most pressing global health challenges right now:
virological.org/t/reproductiâŠ
Drs. Placide Mbala Kingebeni, Tony Wawina Bokalanga, Collins K. Tanui, Emmanuel Lokilo, Princesse Paku, their team, and I used Claude Science to analyze >800 virus genomes and infer the most likely âvirus family treeâ to reveal when the outbreak started, how and where the virus is spreading, and whether spread is increasing or slowing.
Claude Science enables researchers to run complex bioinformatics workflows, including Bayesian phylodynamic inference, and go from sequences to public health insights in minutes (or hours for BEAST X analyses). It also allowed us to compare how stable the results are across >20 different phylodynamic workflows and data subsets, and easily rerun analyses as new data comes in: our current report shows results for genomes released up to last Saturday.
Our results are further corroborated by this preprint, posted one day after the initial Claude Science results, which independently estimated the viral effective population size for genomes collected through mid-August and finds the same early growth rate and slowdown since June: medrxiv.org/content/10.64898âŠ

How do you build Africaâs largest hydroelectric power plant?
The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam took more than a decade to build, with Ethiopians contributing to its financing through bonds, salaries and public fundraising.

Today, I am proud to launch the African Strategic Advisory Group on Genomics (ASAG) â an African-led advisory body to guide how the continent governs, generates and uses genomic data to protect our people.
ASAG will strengthen disease surveillance, enhance epidemic preparedness, support ethical data governance and accelerate the development of African-led medical countermeasures â placing Africa at the centre of the global health security agenda.
This is genomics on Africaâs terms: coordinated, ethical and grounded in our priorities.
