had lunch today in Selma with a Black friend who I’ve known for more than 30 years. She can’t vote tomorrow because she is not a citizen - even though she was born in Selma and has spent her whole life here - but she was so happy that I had come back to vote, and we both hoped for the best, for us and for our respective daughters. Outsiders will have opinions all across the spectrum, but the infuriating complexity and the loving intimacy of this place can’t be understood without being here for a while.

it's sorta funny to watch companies reason this from first principles over many years when it's like...a very well-established fact of basic consumer psychology that people don't like to see new fees introduced at the end of a transaction. the Free Shipping Principle or whatever.
Replying to @heatherpedia
I think a lot of you are misunderstanding the frustration. what's annoying is paying a cleaning fee and then being asked to clean. it feels like double dipping. it may be illogical, but you'd get less complaints about "$100 fee but you don't have to do anything" versus "$50 fee + load the dishwasher"

women are both stereotyped (thus expected) as crying a lot over anything and simultaneously looked down on and criticized for crying. the slightest conformity to the stereotype forced on them is used as proof of their excessive emotion and unfitness for public life in general
grape king retweeted
the thing abt “men aren’t allowed to cry” is that women aren’t really allowed to either. women get mocked and berated for crying, and their momentary tears are used to justify their exclusion from “serious” workplaces, environments and activities

NEW: Canadian government officials sought approval from their American counterparts before releasing parts of a damning report about how the CIA resettled alleged Nazi war criminals in Canada, documents show.
The Americans seemingly did not approve, and Canada subsequently gave the U.S. a heads up when the Federal Court ordered that some previously secret parts of the report be released anyway. readthemaple.com/canada-soug…

⭕️ Mayor Mamdani’s NYPD's planned deal with Israeli firm Cognyte for an AI-powered phone tracker builds on nearly two decades of secretive cell-phone surveillance.
🔹 The department used "Stingray" devices, which pose as cell towers to force nearby phones to connect, 1,016 times between 2008 and 2015 without a written policy, according to records the New York Civil Liberties Union obtained in 2016. Instead of warrants, police relied on lower-court "pen register" orders, the NYCLU found.
🔹 The NYPD bought cell-phone trackers and other spy tools through a confidential "Special Expenses" program that kept about $2.8 billion in surveillance contracts from public view, according to records obtained by the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.) and the Legal Aid Society. Those contracts include more than $5.5 million paid to Verint, the New York-based firm with major Israeli operations that spun off Cognyte in 2021. The program ended in 2020 under the POST Act, a city law forcing the NYPD to disclose its surveillance tools.
🔹 The NYPD's updated cell-site simulator policy, issued in February 2026, removed an earlier assurance that the devices do not use artificial intelligence or machine learning, New York Daily News reported. The policy requires a warrant except in emergencies, when police can get one within 48 hours, or to locate a missing or suicidal person.
🔹But the department still doesn't report each use, according to S.T.O.P. The quiet edit came months before the NYPD moved to buy FalcoNet, which Israeli firm Cognyte markets as AI-driven.
⚡️ Mayor Zohran Mamdani's NYPD is poised to sign a three-year, $750,500 no-bid contract with Israeli surveillance firm Cognyte for FalcoNet, an AI-driven device that mimics a cell tower to track phones and can be mounted on police cars and drones or hidden in a backpack, the New York Daily News reported.
Cognyte won a tender to sell intercept spyware to Myanmar's state telecom weeks before the 2021 military coup, Reuters previously reported. Meta banned the firm the same year, saying its customers used fake accounts to target journalists and politicians in Kenya, Mexico and Indonesia.
The firm is part of an Israeli surveillance industry that grew big as a result of the military's monitoring of Palestinians, whose phone calls Israel's Unit 8200 has intercepted and stored by the millions, including to carry out genocide in Gaza and enforce a brutal illegal occupation in Jerusalem and the West Bank.

As Anthropic prepares to IPO for over $1 trillion, a reminder of Dario Amodei’s words shortly after founding the company:
“Distributed human labor is being used to train AI models by large, centralized actors, who concentrate the resulting profits while in the long run making the human labor obsolete.”
In other words, this IPO will be built off the backs of the world’s creatives - who will get nothing out of it except obsolescence.
It is a totally unjust transfer of wealth and opportunity from artists, writers, musicians & other creatives to a tiny tech elite.
I hope it is remembered as such.
(this quote is from a document he wrote that was unsealed in Bartz v. Anthropic)
