The demands from the Indus river bank protests echo loud and clear: reject extractive practices and ecologically harmful hydraulic projects, and protect the river and its people! @cackarachi @altlawforum @Pried_org @tkfpak

Despite contributing only 0.52% to global CO2 emissions, Pakistan bears the worst climate impacts. The 2022 floods submerged a third of the country with 1,600+ lives lost, 30 million affected and $30 billion in damages (~10% of GDP) #ClimateAction #ClimateChange #NDCsREIMAGINED #ClimateActionNow #MakeNDCsInclusive #NDCsPakistan #ParisAgreement

Despite being among the top 10 most climate-vulnerable countries, Pakistan's NDC 2.0 lacks community involvement, failing to prioritize rehabilitation for those hit hardest by climate change. #NDCsREIMAGINED #ClimateActionNow #MakeNDCsInclusive #NDCsPakistan #ParisAgreement #ClimateAction #ClimateChange #Flood #FloodWarning

The 2021 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) set ambitious targets to combat climate change in Pakistan. However, they fail to address the rehabilitation of communities impacted by climate change. #ClimateAction #ClimateActionNow #NDCsREIMAGINED #MakeNDCsInclusive #NDCsPakistan #ParisAgreement #ClimateChange

The moratoriums placed on imported coal in NDCs 2.0 are not enough. Local coal mining and power generation have wreaked havoc on the lives, livelihoods, and the environment of local communities. #ClimateAction #ClimateActionNow #NDCsREIMAGINED #MakeNDCsInclusive #NDCsPakistan #ParisAgreement #ClimateChange #FreePakistanFromCoal

The 2022 floods were largely driven by human-induced climate change! Years of large dam and water projects promoted by the World Bank and ADB have worsened Pakistan's climate situation. Harmful projects, like debt-heavy dams on the Indus, costly coal power, reliance on fossil fuels, and poorly planned privatization, have pushed the country to the edge. Pakistan’s climate and debt crisis can not be understood, let alone resolved, without addressing the historical injustices responsible for this catastrophe. #ClimateAction #Worldbank #AsianDevelopmentBank #NDCsREIMAGINED #ClimateActionNow #MakeNDCsInclusive #NDCsPakistan #ParisAgreement

The countries most affected by climate change are often those that contribute the least to greenhouse gas emissions. This disparity underscores the need for climate justice, which requires the Global North to take responsibility not just through debt relief but by actively supporting the Global South in mitigating the impacts of climate change and adapting to its consequences through financial and technical resources. #NDCsREIMAGINED #ClimateAction #ClimateActionNow #MakeNDCsInclusive #NDCsPakistan #ParisAgreement @UNDP @ClimateChangePK @GCISC3 @giz_gmbh @GretaThunberg @sherryrehman @UNDP_Pakistan @ACJCE_Pakistan

Webinar Alert: Free Pakistan From Coal Register Now: forms.gle/nLHbWHDxTrJ1mx8PA Coal development in Tharparkar has unfolded a massive decline in communities’ well-being, impacting their health, livelihood, mobility, and quality of life, not to mention the impact on air and water quality. The people of Pakistan want affordable, safe, non-polluting, and sustainable energy for all. Big coal infrastructure projects have benefited foreign investors at the expense of Pakistani nationals by locking in ever-higher electricity rates. In this regard, @ACJCE_Pakistan x @lok_sujag are organising a webinar to highlight the critical need for a move away from dirty coal to clean renewables. The webinar will see participation from energy, legal, and finance experts who will discuss how Pakistan can progressively advance towards a clean and just transition.

Pakistan is suffering from air pollution levels that are among the highest in the world, reducing life expectancy in the country by more than 2.5 years. During the past 3 years, more than 95% of Pakistan’s installed coal-based electricity generation capacity (5090 MW) was commissioned, mostly with the help of the @WorldBank. 9 power plants have been proposed in the Thar region. The proposed plants would constitute one of the largest air pollutant, mercury and CO2 emissions hotspots in South Asia. New research now reveals that coal mining in Thar, Pakistan has polluted local groundwater up to 5 km away from the mines. 25 wells in Gorano village have been closed. Only one Reverse Osmosis plant has been installed — not nearly enough to serve the 3,500 without reliable access to clean drinking water. . . . #FreePakistanFromCoal #COP29 #loksujag #voicesfromthemargins
