The govt deliberately hid tests it commissioned pre #Grenfell that showed #cladding was dangerous & flammable. The govt then engaged in deceit & cover-up post Grenfell. It is now time for the govt to pay a hefty compensation to ALL its victims of the #BuildingSafetyCrisis.
The chain of cover-ups that led to Grenfell - UnHerd. ⁦@PeteApps⁩ whose book is excellent. Points out here the attempts by government POST Grenfell to claim the cladding on the building had been ‘banned’. Proven not true by the ban later announced unherd.com/newsroom/the-chai…

.@HomeBuildersFed who know full well the quality of new build homes is so poor & so dangerous that lenders won't touch them with a barge pole. Instead of squeezing taxpayers & leaseholders for obscene profits for your rogue members, do your job & build safe, quality homes.
Mortgage availability and pricing are often less favourable for new build homes than for older properties. Some lenders do not offer mortgages on new builds, while others provide less competitive terms, particularly for apartments. As a result, higher deposits are often required and many households are blocked from buying energy-efficient new homes. Your First Home provides an opportunity to address this, though the detail will be crucial.

Well, you could try building blocks of flats that don't end up either unsaleable or fleece people with service charges and ground rents. There's a long list of people trapped in shoddy blocks of flats that developers made lots of money off.

🦺 The Remediation Bill will be debated in Parliament today. Tune in from around 1pm to hear whether MPs believe it goes far enough to make homes fully safe, hold those responsible to account and protect all leaseholders. And whether Government will listen and strengthen it…

Well done to the amazing leaseholders of @NonQualifyingLH! Truly grateful for your tireless work on this. @AngelaRayner better follow through.
Some welcome news from @AngelaRayner today. Funding will be made available for collectively owned buildings, and a Govt amendment will be tabled to extend leaseholder protections from 3 to 6 properties. Positive steps we've long called for. We look forward to seeing the detail.

'No building and no residents will be left behind' says @AngelaRayner at the Second Reading of the building safety bill. I'm not sure those who have spent a huge amount of money/their life savings on interim costs eg insurance will come out of this not feeling left behind..

I understand why we journalists press Labour on their housing target - but IMO questioning why they won’t hit it & what they plan to do is now far more urgent: - housebuilding in trouble because of rising costs and developers unwilling or unable to adjust their profit expectations…plus - …younger buyers locked out so can’t buy their homes partly because of… - fluctuating mortgage rates due to global volatility… - and the fact nobody in their right mind wants a leasehold flat now (flats key to building at scale)
Speaking with Anne McElvoy, Housing Secretary Angela Rayner says Labour’s promise at the last general election to build 1.5 million new homes was “always a stretch target”

To be honest, all I see are high-rise blocks of flats with brick-slip external walls, and my immediate thought is: what nasty surprises could be lurking behind them? Missing cavity barriers? Faulty fire doors? Oh, and what will the service charge be in a couple of years' time?
These pinwheel-shaped blocks in south London, complete with bluebell woods and private balconies, shows pleasant social housing can be built on a budget thetimes.com/life-style/prop…

MPs debate the Remediation Bill tomorrow. We've told @AngelaRayner: Labour must take control and make homes fully safe and sellable. Positive discussions must now lead to real change. Read our meeting report and call to action. Email your MP today ⬇️ endourcladdingscandal.org/po…

Rather than creating a free market for managing agents by ending leasehold & giving flat owners power to hire and fire managing agents You can now write a strongly worded email to a managing agent regulator, who like all other housing regulators, will probably do nothing to help
WE DID IT! 🙌 In July 2025, I introduced my Bill calling for a regulator for managing agents. Today, the Government has committed to introducing one. Managing agents found ripping off leaseholders will face losing their licences. A huge win for leaseholders.

Afraid to say we’re still among the 854 buildings where remediation hasn’t started, and there’s still no plan in place. @AngelaRayner

❌ Meanwhile, 854 buildings have not started remediation and still have no plan. Nor is there clarity on the buildings developers claim do not require work.

Our remediation in Swansea by Persimmon was due to start November 2025. It's now Spring 2027 but nothing in writing. We're waiting for alarm upgrades and have 24/7 Waking Watch costing 230 leaseholders £110.000 a month. Life is miserable. None of this is our fault.

The message is clear: building more homes has been prioritised over making existing homes safe. Despite the missed targets, self-reported data and years of delay, there is still no meaningful change in @mhclg's approach. Warm words. Weak oversight. Unsafe homes.

Have the underlying assessments all been independently audited? How many decisions were overturned? Will residents see the evidence? Or will @UKLabour ministers continue to let the developers mark their own homework?

MHCLG’s dashboard shows which developers missed the 80% target – and by how much. But there is still no clarity on what consequences they will face.
