I'm not posting any more of my opinion on the fic discourse cause i don't wanna piss people off, but i will say it's disturbing to see people moving like capitalist conservatives and generating anti-library propaganda. like what the fuck

Only at the outskirts of this drama but fic authors are being so silly. AO3 is an archive, you're not there for engagement, you cannot monetize fics, you are purely chasing clout if you feel the need for high engagement. There's nothing entitled about backing up an *archive* work

So actually downloading fics and preserving them in drives has been fandom norm since the mid 2000s when fanfic purges happened. This is not a new thing. What is new is the pushback against it and an overwhelming need for engagement that happened post Covid.

Oh no ppl love my fics so much they downloaded it to read offline/over and over and think it's worth sharing with other members of the fandom, let me delete it forever bc that doesn't get me views/kudos (numbers on screen btw)

ive written fanfiction for 15 years now and i dont understand how we're at a point where people are so obsessed with engagement metrics that people actively circulating and enjoying your work is a bad thing.

omg people arent "posting" fanfics on google drive, they already had those fics downloaded, like a small archive of their own, it's a temporary fix, people will eventually go back to ao3. nobody it's getting money out of sharing them and they still got your username

yes omg the "i do it FOR FREEEE!!!" thing is so telling. you dont say that about a hobby that you like doing, you do your hobbies "for fun" lol. i write for fun. posting it "for free" isn't a big deal because it's not legally possible to make money off of it

“but I won’t get comments or kudos if they share privately” im gonna hold your hand when i say this: when you post on the internet, you aren’t entitled to these things. try writing to appease the voices in your head instead & you will find peace
well now we know that a lot of them only write to become a celebrity

Entitled to comments.
Entitled to kudos.
Only read per these author specific T&Cs that aren't ao3s T&Cs but I'm entitled cause I have fics downloaded?
Bet bet bet.
"Praise us always or we'll stop writing,"
Stop. You're in it for clout. You can stop.

if you see fandoms banding together and using the community they’ve built over time to trade fics and make the most of an annoying situation, and think “but how will i get praise/attention for my stories now?” i fear you’re not writing for the right reasons.
God forbid the concept of getting to read for free as revolutionary, your writing being enjoyed in and of itself as its own reward.
Like, you don’t get to “kudos” or “comment” on a writer from hundreds of years ago who’s long dead, yet you enjoy their work anyway. The external validation never mattered—it’s the WRITING ITSELF that does.
Why are we holding fanfiction to an impossibly higher standard lol

this whole ao3 discourse of fanfic authors acting like copyright applies to them kinda proves people would be against the idea of libraries if they weren't already a thing
😭What is going on with some fic authors?? Treating AO3 like social media where engagement is expected rather than appreciated is wild. As a writer myself, I love kudos and comments, but back in my day, someone downloading your fic to reread offline was the highest praise.
Since the very concept of fanfiction was created actually lol. Literally since time immemorial of fanfiction
As to why this is a problem now: social media and influencer culture corrupting writers into thinking writing NEEDS external validation, instead of writing as its own reward.
And if they do want to get paid for their “labor”, they shouldn’t be writing fanfiction in the first place, since the work isn’t even legally theirs.
It’s the funny hypocrisy of refusing to have your “work” shared when you yourself are stealing copyrighted IP for your own without permission from the original creators.
Because the issue was never about copyright. It’s about losing access to external validation, ie. kudos and comments.

Also why is this new? Downloading and sharing fics have always been a thing since AO3s creation. Why is this a problem now?

The whole downloading fanfics off AO3 discourse just exposed the fact a lot of yall think you are so best selling NYT author or are only writing fics for the kudos and not for fun.
