Pretty great company to be in. Thanks for including us in this year's Fintech 100 @CBInsights 🙌
The 9th annual CB Insights Fintech 100 is here. Meet the startups most likely to shape the future of financial services. Many of this year’s winners are building beneath the products customers see: compliance, data enrichment, tokenization, and cross-border payments. We selected them based on deal activity, industry partnerships, team strength, investor strength, executive interviews, and proprietary metrics. Together, these companies have raised $10.9B in equity funding and have disclosed 330+ partnerships since 2025. These are the startups to watch if you’re investing, acquiring, partnering, or competing in financial services. See the 2026 cohort and market map: cbinsights.com/research/repo…

We're still buzzing from @money2020! Between launching The Standard, putting our CEO and COO to work handing out magazines, and giving away 1oz of gold, it's safe to say we had a pretty eventful week. Thanks to everyone who made it one to remember!

In 2023, 3 years before this chart, @will_lawrenceTO had a clear vision for how AI agents were going to automate compliance based on his experience at WhatsApp and Paxos Fast forward, and @brettonai has become the enterprise leader in AI for financial crimes Individual banks can spend $100-$300M *each* on human compliance analysts for poor results - including backlogged alerts, fines, and poor customer experiences Bretton AI has become the trusted provider for regulated financial institutions at scale, serving customers worth over $1 trillion in aggregate market cap Congrats on the $75M Series B, and welcome @rajeevdham and @SapphireVC to the team! fortune.com/2026/02/10/brett…

Large financial institutions spend 6-10% of their revenue on compliance; with the majority of spend on human analysts who complete mundane data transformation tasks There's a new category of AI agents that automate this work, going after the $60bn in spend in North America alone, and enabling businesses to onboard more customers, reduce compliance risk, and save costs If you're curious about this category, stop by @money2020 and hear from - @will_lawrenceTO, CEO & co-founder of @greenliteai - Melissa Strait, Chief Compliance Officer of @coinbase - @shara_chang, Chief Compliance Officer of @Chime

So I’m back full time-ish to the SF Bay Area.  As, often quietly, are so many leaders and execs I’ve known for years. I spent about 60% of my time since lockdown in SoCal, 30% in Palo Alto, and the rest in Misc.  It wasn’t to work at the beach, it was for family reasons.  But still, I like many of us went from someone who never felt they could leave the SF Bay, to some who well, did. The SF Bay Area is back.  It’s clearly the center of the AI Boom, even if many are based outside of it, in Paris and elsewhere.  YCombinator is having a renaissance, with 3 batches of 100s of top tier startups being hatched in Dogpatch in SF.  Most will stay.  Even top European accelerators like EF have come to SF.  Many VCs that for whatever reason left, have returned. New York is great, SoCal and Miami are great places to live and OK for tech, and certainly there are segments of SaaS and B2B where SF isn’t as compelling.  Vertical SaaS and parts of eCommerce may well be so focused on other geos, for example, it’s not worth it to be in SF Bay. But we’ll all kind of back.  At least most of us. It is different though.  That’s the subtle thing: •The SF Bay may no longer make sense for anyone that isn’t truly ambitious.  Better to find a remote job and live in a cheaper, and calmer geo. •It will take years for parts of SF to be nice again.  Some parts are great though.  But SOMA and much of the financial district are still awful.  Palo Alto and the Peninsula are as pretty, sunny, and expensive as ever. •The density isn’t quite there.  But it’s still #1.  Before March 2020, you could reach out your window and see a dozen leading SaaS execs.  The hour after the Stay at Home order went out, I bumped into the President of Atlassian on the street.  That doesn’t really happen anymore, at least for now.    •All VCs will invest anywhere now.  But it’s much easier if you are in SF Bay.  It makes getting to know each other so, so much easier. •Most founders are OK hiring VPs anywhere now — but really, strongly prefer to work together in the office.  It just gives you a leg up as a VP, especially a first-time VP, to be in SF Bay. •It’s by far the easier place to meet up with other CEOs and founders.  You can do it anywhere.  But it’s so much easier in SF Bay. My somewhat obvious learnings.  I’m back.  I miss the beach.  I like it here, but I don’t love it.  It lacks the density of pre-March 2020, that’s underappreciated. But if you are really going for it, I think most B2B founders will really benefit from being here.  And probably most ambitious VPs and VPs-to-be, as well. It’s time.  I’m back.  It might be time for you to come back, too.

Automating work for highly-regulated financial services firms was not on the 2024 bingo card even 2 years ago – and yet, it's happening! I moderated a panel at @Finovate with 3 founder CEOs blazing the trail: @will_lawrenceTO from @greenliteai , @johnjnay from @normativeai, and @_aj from @ParchaHQ. We spoke about the opportunity for AI agents in financial services to create a 10x improvement in how critical work gets done. It was one of the clearest and most compelling panels I’ve moderated. I’ll post the entire conversation when I have it, but until then, 🖐️takeaways: 1️⃣ Agentic AI is so powerful because it automates processes by stringing together discrete actions through reasoning and decision-making 2️⃣ Organizational readiness has two requirements: (a) A dire need for more work to be done > creates a willingness to try something new (b) Have clear and defined processes > can define work to be done and measure outcomes 3️⃣ It’s easier to get started with work automation than with most other technology because you don’t have to change anything at first: you can run the agents alongside your existing process and see how the agents compare. Key dimensions of comparison include speed, false positives, false negatives, total output, cost, and bias 4️⃣ Build or buy? Why customers need to partner with startups to automate work: (a) LLMs don’t work out of the box – there’s a large upfront investment to make agents work that can be amortized across multiple clients; (b) Stay up-to-date with latest regulatory guidance; (c) While no data is shared, model improvements benefit all users across instances 5️⃣ Regulated industries are the perfect place for agents because errors are extremely costly – even existential. Humans make mistakes. Agents, on the other hand, are reliable, comprehensive, and fully auditable Reach out to these founders to learn more!
