An average person's experience of AI is that it jumps at us uninvited in everything, fucks up Google Search, ruins our experience of seeing cute videos as it forces us to constantly check if they're real, pumps out bullshit, fuels propaganda, etc.
The differing perceptions of AI are wild. The country just voted against data centers on 40+ provisions nationwide and hates AI. (Plenty of legitimate gripes.) But most of those people are just unaware that AI is finding a new cancer cure or treatment weekly, going through decades of peer reviewed data and uncovering mountains of errors, that its correcting, throughout every academic field. Replacing billions of man hours of drudgery. Closest thing to a “miracle” I’ve ever witnessed. When I talk to people outside of tech/VC, they’re just unaware of all of it.

Walking = Dementia killer
A UK Biobank study of 78,430 adults found that just 3,826 steps a day was linked to a 25% lower risk of dementia.
At 9,826 steps a day, the risk was 51% lower.
But step count is only half the story. Speed matters too.
Those who walked at a peak pace of 112 steps a minute had a 62% lower risk.
This was an observational study, so it can't prove causation. But the dose-response pattern, with more steps and faster steps both tracking with lower risk, strengthens the case that walking plays a protective role.
The likely mechanisms are well established:
→ Higher BDNF, supporting neurogenesis in the hippocampus (one of the first regions hit in dementia), plasticity and the survival of existing neurons
→ Better blood flow to the brain, delivering more oxygen and nutrients (reduced cerebral blood flow is an early feature of dementia)
→ Improved mitochondrial function, especially with brisker walking, giving neurons the energy they need while limiting ROS build-up
→ Better glymphatic clearance, lower brain insulin resistance, less neuroinflammation and lower stress
