Iran’s leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, in a meeting with Iran’s top security chief, Mohsen Rezaei, hints at conditions to end the war.
He stressed the need to secure the rights and interests of the Iranian nation & the Resistance Front by fulfilling the conditions set out by Iranian officials to end the war & state of “neither war nor peace.”
The Leader described the enemy’s growing desperation as a result of national resistance.
More importantly, he said safeguarding national and regional security must be through control over the Strait of Hormoz.
He emphasized proactive and timely public communication to sustain popular participation in defending the country and the Islamic Republic.
During the meeting, Rezaei presented a report on conditions across various sectors of the country and ongoing efforts.
He identified the pursuit of the Islamic Republic’s strategic policy of “establishing indigenous regional security arrangements and order” as one of the initiatives currently being undertaken by the SNSC Secretariat.
Other key topics discussed included:
• Strengthening national cohesion, unity, and mutual trust between the public and officials
• Utilizing the Constitution, particularly Article 176, to assist the president and executive bodies in resolving national challenges more efficiently
• Strengthening bilateral relations with neighboring countries based on sustainable, mutual interests.

Changes from the old to the new wording on the Iran page:
Removed
•The reference to the US–Iran memorandum of understanding (MOU) of 17 June
•"Since 8 July" as the start date for the attacks
•"There is a risk of more attacks and unforeseen escalation in the region"
Added
•"deeply unpredictable" (previously just "unpredictable")
•"the risk of sudden escalation is high" (previously "a risk of more attacks and unforeseen escalation")
•Iran has stated its intention to target locations associated with the US and Israel, "including, but not limited to, organisations, businesses, facilities, and institutions." This is entirely new.
•Attacks are now attributed to "Iran and others" (previously only Iran)
•The timeline now runs from "early 2026" instead of from 8 July
Softened qualifiers
•"periodic airspace closures" became "airspace closures"
•"potential travel disruptions" became "travel disruptions"
Wider audience
•"British nationals currently in the Middle East" became "British nationals in, or planning to travel through, the Middle East." The advice now covers people transiting the region, not just those already there.

Two RAF Fairford terror attack suspects were reportedly in contact with an Iranian 🇮🇷 handler known as "Ali."
Nouman Essghir and Mohmed Abdulkarim reportedly received instructions from "Ali," who is believed to be an Iranian operative. "Ali" had reportedly been in contact with both Essghir and Abdulkarim for "a number of years."
UK 🇬🇧CTP believes Iran's intelligence services were behind the attempted attack.
Authorities believe "Ali" may potentially also be connected to an incident at the Israeli 🇮🇱 embassy earlier this year.

Sceptics often say the reason we are heating up is that we are emerging from an ice age. New glacier research shows that, in fact, that trend stopped 2000 years ago and the world cooled again until the 60s, when human emissions started global warming.

Spoiler alert - Even if he loses the bulk of his seats, Benjamin Netanyahu will still be Israel's Prime Minister next week.
As a caretaker PM, he could remain in office for weeks, perhaps months.
A record number of Israelis have come out to choose their new government. Polls close at 10pm local time (8pm UK).
Official results should be published on 4 November.

Israel’s elections could influence events far beyond the Middle East. Voting is underway, and the latest polls put the new Yashar party, led by Gadi Eisenkot, in the lead. But finishing first does not guarantee taking power. Everything will depend on who can reach an agreement with whom and form a government.
Even a change of prime minister, however, offers little reason to expect a rapid shift towards peace in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. Eisenkot and Netanyahu both support tough security policies and oppose an independent Palestinian state. They differ significantly on other issues: judicial independence, military conscription for the ultra-Orthodox, and settlements in Palestinian territories. Eisenkot may be more open to certain compromises, but he remains willing to use force.
The prospects for peace depend in part on what Israeli politicians are prepared to call a victory. For some, weakening their adversaries and securing reliable security guarantees might be enough. For religious nationalists, territorial expansion is a goal in itself. They may therefore see abandoning annexation as a defeat, even if attacks cease. Netanyahu has to accommodate such partners to remain in power. Reducing their influence could matter at least as much as replacing the prime minister.
Better relations with the West could help Eisenkot both negotiate and wage war. He has already supported US–Israeli strikes on Iran and proposed a US-led regional security alliance. His government might find it easier to secure Western support for a limited military operation if it also curbed settler violence and agreed to negotiations over Gaza. Diplomatic flexibility would therefore not necessarily mean a less forceful military policy.
The next 6–12 months are likely to bring renewed attempts to use force to extract concessions, followed by a return to negotiations. One possible scenario is another US–Israeli campaign against Iran. Trump may be hoping for a short operation after which he can declare victory, strike a deal, and bring down energy prices. Israeli leaders may seek to use American support while it remains available. CNN reports that military options have been drawn up, although no final decision has yet been made.
Iran will find it difficult to make concessions as long as its leaders fear being overthrown. If Tehran believes that meeting the demands would leave it more vulnerable to attack, continued resistance will seem safer.
A limited operation could escalate into a major war despite the participants’ initial intentions. The trigger could be heavy American casualties, the destruction of energy infrastructure, or strikes that Tehran interprets as the beginning of an attempt to eliminate its leadership. Iran could respond by attacking more countries and targets, seeking to make the war too costly for its adversaries. The parties would then become increasingly embroiled in an exchange of strikes.
The war could intensify the very threats it was launched to eliminate. If conventional weapons and diplomacy fail to protect Iran from attack, advocates of acquiring nuclear weapons will gain another argument in their favour. Overthrowing the current leadership would not guarantee democracy either: military leaders could take its place, and the struggle for power could drag on for years.
Even if a major war is avoided, without an agreement the region could remain trapped between strikes and fragile ceasefires for a long time. Under this scenario, the US would avoid large-scale intervention, Iran would reject its demands, and Israel would continue conducting individual military operations. A similar pattern is already evident in Gaza and Lebanon: the intensity of fighting has declined, but disputes over disarmament, territorial control, and troop withdrawal remain unresolved.
An agreement between the US and Iran could offer both sides an acceptable way out of the confrontation. Tehran would agree to verifiable restrictions on its nuclear programme, an end to attacks, safe passage for shipping, and reduced military aid to groups that threaten its neighbours. In return, it would receive relief from the blockade and sanctions, alongside a commitment not to overthrow its leadership by military force as long as it complies with the agreement. Trump could present this as a diplomatic victory, while Iran would gain economic relief. Such an agreement would not rule out domestic political change in the country.
Trump may put pressure on Netanyahu if continued warfare undermines American interests. Washington bears military and economic costs, while Israeli leaders may consider further strikes necessary. According to media reports, some of Trump’s advisers are already dissatisfied with Netanyahu’s policies. A Republican defeat in the congressional elections could strengthen the White House’s desire to end the confrontation, although it would not, on its own, determine its decisions.
Iran’s neighbours seek to contain its influence but fear the consequences of its collapse. Further attacks on infrastructure, refugee flows, and prolonged instability would threaten their own security. Talks involving Saudi, Turkish, and Pakistani delegations in Tehran show that these countries are trying to shape events. Their interests nevertheless differ: the UAE may deepen military cooperation with Israel while opposing its policies towards the Palestinians.
For a lasting peace, an agreement with Iran must be coupled with a settlement of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. Reducing the threat of a major regional war will not, in itself, remove the causes of local conflicts. The shared goals should be a secure existence for Israel, a sovereign Palestine, and mutual commitments by states to refrain from aggression.
To achieve this, Israel needs a government able to negotiate without depending on supporters of annexation. It would need to halt settlement expansion and settler violence, accept Palestinian statehood, and establish the terms for withdrawing troops. Eisenkot’s current platform does not include such changes. His coming to power could facilitate some negotiations, but a comprehensive settlement would require a broader reassessment of Israeli policy.
A Palestinian state must have effective authority over its territory and take responsibility for security within it. The two-state model entails agreed borders, mutual recognition, and protection for both peoples from attack. This requires Palestinian authorities with public support, accountable institutions, and control over all armed forces. Hamas cannot retain a separate army, and Israel cannot maintain indefinite military control that reduces Palestinian sovereignty to a formality. Statehood, governance reforms, and the disarmament of Hamas are linked in the 2025 New York Declaration.
Confidence in the agreements will depend on the US being willing to demand compliance from all parties. Washington could guarantee Israel’s protection while making part of its support conditional on adherence to the agreements. For Iran, fulfilling its commitments must bring real economic relief. The guarantees themselves must be secured in a way that allows them to withstand a change of US president.
Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen will need political settlements of their own. In Lebanon, there is already a basis for strengthening the national army and withdrawing Israeli troops, although implementation remains difficult. Regional agreements involving Iran, Turkey, and Arab states are needed on non-aggression, safe passage for shipping, and the prevention of military clashes. The Gulf states could support these efforts by funding reconstruction and expanding trade.
Peace will have powerful opponents, so it will need public support. For supporters of annexation, compromise would mean giving up territorial claims; for Iran’s security establishment, it would mean losing some regional influence. Hamas and Hezbollah leaders may see disarmament as a threat to their power and personal safety. Even weakened, they will retain the capacity to derail agreements. It will be easier to resist such efforts if people experience the practical benefits of peace: security, political rights, jobs, and the opportunity to rebuild their lives.

President Trump: “We didn’t start the war with Iran. Iran started the war with us.”
The claim is incorrect. Israel launched a war against Iran in June 2025, with the U.S. joining the attacks. The U.S. and Israel launched another war in February 2026, and Washington resumed strikes in July.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing chief Laurence Taylor suggests the RAF Fairford suspects were released on bail as part of a tactical move by investigators to collect more evidence, which he says was successful
“We know that decisions made during our investigations can sometimes appear illogical to those on the outside, but I want to make it very clear, that there will always be good reason, or rationale behind them. We will always ensure that, should we identify any ongoing threat, we will manage that as part of the investigation.
“Like our adversaries, our tactics vary – and may not always be obvious.
“In this case, this decision-making has led to swifter progress, better evidence and ultimately us securing the charges I have announced today.
“In sensitive investigations like this, it can take time to convert intelligence, into evidence and that is what scores of my officers and staff have been doing over the last few weeks.”

This Australian's reply to Trump's rant about “NATO not being there for America” is perfect.
"Mate. You run a country with 600,000 homeless people sleeping on the street tonight. A country where 40% of adults can't cover a $400 emergency without borrowing money. A country where insulin costs more than a car payment and people are rationing it to survive. A country where medical debt is the number 1 cause of bankruptcy. A country where women are dying in hospital car parks because doctors are too scared of abortion laws to treat a miscarriage.
You lock up more of your own citizens than any nation on earth. More than China. More than Russia. More than North Korea. The land of the free has 2 million people in cages, and a quarter of them haven't even been convicted of anything. They're just too poor to make bail.
Your life expectancy is going backwards. You're the only developed nation where that's happening. Your infant mortality rate is worse than Cuba's. Your kids do active shooter drills between maths and English while you sell the gunmaker's stock to your mates.
Your minimum wage hasn't moved in 15 years. You've got teachers working 2 jobs and veterans sleeping under bridges and you just spent a trillion dollars flattening a country that didn't attack you.
And you’ve got a convicted felon, adjudicating raping, paedophile protecting, porn star shagging insurrectionist running the biggest dumpster fire war campaign since the Taliban in Afghanistan thanked you very much for losing again.
And you're calling Greenland poorly run?
Greenland has universal healthcare. Free education. One of the lowest incarceration rates in the world. Nobody goes bankrupt there because they got sick. Nobody dies in a waiting room because their insurance said no.
'NATO wasn't there when we needed them." When exactly was that, champ? September 11? Because NATO invoked Article 5 for the first and only time in history FOR YOU. Soldiers from dozens of countries deployed, fought, bled, and died in Afghanistan FOR YOU. Australia wasn't even in NATO and we still showed up. For 20 years.
And you pulled out at 2am without telling anyone and left them to deal with the mess.
So maybe before you start calling other countries poorly run, have a look at your own backyard, you spray-tanned aluminium siding salesman. The only thing poorly run in this picture is your f----- mouth."

3 Russian diesel tankers are steaming for the US.
One is under sanctions, the FT reports.
The first carries 40k tons, about 300k barrels.
It reaches New York around 7 November.
The US burns roughly 4m barrels of diesel a day.
Now Congress is going after everyone who would touch the cargo.
A bipartisan group of lawmakers, including Republican Thom Tillis, wrote to 6 banks and 4 ports:
🏦JPMorgan, Bank of America, Citi, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley
⚓️Houston, Beaumont, Corpus Christi, New York and New Jersey
Their argument: a 2022 law bans Russian oil imports, and the White House can’t waive it.
They asked the banks and ports to preserve their records by 28 October.
The White House can pause sanctions.
It can’t stop a future Congress from investigating.
So every bank that finances the cargo, every port that stores it and every buyer that takes it carries that risk.
Diesel is $6.28 a gallon, and one cargo won’t fix it.
I’m watching who unloads the first one in New York.
themerchantsnews.substack.co…
🛢️🇷🇺A Russian diesel tanker is heading for New York.
It left Primorsk on the Baltic and has been intermittently signalling New York as its destination.
If it arrives, it would be the first Russian diesel cargo into the US since Washington banned Russian oil imports in 2022.
The size is easy to picture.
Russia says its first US cargo carries about 40,000 tonnes, around 300,000 barrels.
That’s almost exactly the 315,000 barrels the US is lending from its Northeast heating oil reserve this month.
It’s also about two hours of US diesel demand.
So this one cargo won’t change the price on its own.
What matters is where it is going.
New York Harbor is where US diesel futures are priced.
It’s also the market feeling the shortage most, ahead of the heating season and the midterms.
Russian diesel used to fill this gap.
In November 2021, four tankers brought about 2 million barrels into New York and New Haven in a single month.
Then came the war, the sanctions and the ban.
Now Moscow has partly lifted its own export ban after the deal with Washington.
Its plan is 300,000 tonnes in October, 500,000 in November and 1 million in December.
The first cargo is small, but it shows how far the diesel shortage has pushed policy.
I wrote an article on it.

WATCH: 🇷🇴 Antena 3 CNN has released footage from inside the burned building at Romania’s Carfil weapons factory in Brașov, following a fire linked by Romanian intelligence to a sabotage operation coordinated by Russian intelligence services.
Romanian authorities say the network was coordinated from Russia and had been assigned targets across the region, including arms manufacturing facilities and other military-related sites. Security has since been increased around military units and defence facilities across Romania.
BREAKING: 🇷🇴🇷🇺 Romania’s intelligence service (SRI) has uncovered a Russian intelligence-directed sabotage network involved in a fire at the Carfil military industrial platform in Brașov, Romania, on September 14.
According to the SRI, the network was coordinated from Russia and involved several citizens of former Soviet states living in EU countries. Judicial proceedings are underway in Romania and in cooperation with authorities in other European countries.
Investigators say Russian coordinators had assigned the network additional targets across the region, including arms factories and other military and industrial facilities. The SRI also identified other sabotage attempts in Romania this year, including at facilities used to train Ukrainian armed forces.
Romanian authorities say the operations aim to intimidate European countries, damage their defence capabilities and undermine regional security. The investigation is ongoing, with Romanian intelligence working alongside national agencies and European partners.
