Masked Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian villagers on Friday, setting olive groves on fire and slinging rocks.
Caught in the attack was Post photographer Heidi Levine. “They just kept kicking me and kicking me, like probably 50 times,” Levine said. wapo.st/4yt6dHY

Today's expanded complaint asks the court for another ruling in favor of the news outlets Trump tried to ban: "The court should declare unlawful the president's ban of plaintiffs and the White House’s further unconstitutional actions, including its continued exclusions of plaintiffs from specific White House press areas for retaliatory and viewpoint-discriminatory reasons, and enter permanent injunctive relief in favor of CNN, MS NOW, and Politico." cnn.com/2026/10/28/media/cnn…
Power struggles and conflicts come down to people. It is alarming that U.S. journalist, Reza Valizadeh, is not only wrongfully detained in #Iran, but also denied essential medical treatment. #FreeReza 👇👇👇
We remain deeply concerned by reports that U.S. citizen and former @RadioFarda_ journalist Reza Valizadeh is being denied critical medical treatment while wrongfully detained by Iranian authorities.

I joined fellow UN experts in expressing serious concern over the response to student protests in France.
Excessive force, violence and mass arrests are not an appropriate response to social protest in a democratic society governed by the rule of law.
Reports of serious — in some cases irreversible — injuries suffered by young demonstrators, including minors, demand prompt and effective action.
Violence against police officers and damage to property must also be investigated and those responsible held accountable.
But public order cannot become a justification for sidelining fundamental freedoms.
Mass arrests and disproportionate policing can have a profound chilling effect on the exercise of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
Authorities have a duty to facilitate peaceful protest, address its underlying causes and ensure that any use of force remains strictly necessary and proportionate.
#France: UN experts appalled by crackdown on student protests. “The scale of the arrests and detention appears disproportionate and deters demonstrators from exercising their freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly.”

Yesterday, after weeks of escalating crackdowns, Egypt’s govt shut down Mada Masr, one of the country’s leading independent outlets, & convicted its editor-in-chief, Lina Attalah.
They must reverse this decision & stop their assault on press freedoms.
Journalism is not a crime.

I’ve so much admiration for Lina Attalah and her colleagues in Egypt. They set an example for journalistic courage and independence that all of us can learn from.

I am deeply concerned by the escalating pressure on independent journalism in #Egypt.
Although Mada Masr editor-in-chief Lina Attalah has now been released after several hours in custody, the court ruling ordering the closure of @MadaMasr, the confiscation of its equipment and a 3 million EGP fine remains a devastating blow to independent media.
Shutting down one of Egypt’s few remaining independent newsrooms raises profound concerns for press freedom and the public’s right to know.
Mada Masr Editor-in-Chief Lina Attalah was released following several hours in custody after the New Cairo Misdemeanor Court convicted her on the charge of managing a website without a license during the first hearing in the session this morning.
The court imposed the maximum penalty for the charge, a LE3 million fine and an order for the closure of Mada Masr’s website and the confiscation of its equipment and devices.
Mada Masr paid the fine in full to the court, waiting several hours before procedures were taken for Attalah’s release.
During the release procedures, Attalah learned of a one-year prison sentence issued against her in absentia in 2024, on charges of publishing false news and managing an unlicensed website. Her lawyers took steps to challenge the ruling, with a hearing in a retrial of the case scheduled for November 11.
During the court session this morning, the court refused to accede to defense lawyers’ requests for an opportunity to review the case file, to submit additional evidence to the court and for additional witnesses to be heard. It then appointed an unknown party to act as Attalah’s defense lawyer, despite the presence of her appointed defense counsel in court and her own objection to being represented by a court-appointed attorney, according to the director of the Egyptian Initiative for Human Rights, Hossam Bahgat.

Scandal after scandal of journalists, politicians & others being targeted with spyware is followed by inaction. We at @pressfreedom are advocating for a reasonable & responsible policy of export controls. It's time. There is no reason to continue giving free rein to this madness.
CPJ and partners today called on the @EU_Commission to stop the export by European Union member states of dual-use #surveillance software to countries with records of spying on journalists.
The joint letter to @MarosSefcovic makes recommendations aimed at addressing loopholes in the EU’s Dual-Use Regulation, a 2021 law that controls the export of technology with both a civilian and military purpose.

1/ This isn't front page news, but it's important.
For years, Congress has said no taxpayer money to Egypt to help them repress free speech.
But Trump ignored Congress. And a disaster resulted for the Egyptian people.
Soon, maybe disaster for us.

One of the world's greatest and bravest journalists, full stop. Solidarity.
In an absolutely egregious escalation against press freedom, Egyptian journalist and @MadaMasr Editor-in-Chief @Linaattalah has been referred to trial on charges of establishing, managing, and operating a website without a license. Her trial is set to begin this Tuesday, Oct 27.

Less than a month after arresting the entire Matsadaash newsroom, the Egyptian govt has now filed baseless charges against the editor-in-chief of Mada Masr, continuing their largest crackdown in years.
This assault on the free press must end NOW. Journalism is not a crime.
CPJ condemns the referral of @MadaMasr Editor-in-Chief Lina Attalah to trial for operating a website without a license that Egyptian authorities have themselves refused to grant for years. Egypt is weaponizing its media law to punish independent journalism and intensify one of its worst crackdowns on the press in years, which began with the arrest of six Matsdaash journalists. It is long past time for Egypt to end this campaign and allow independent media to report freely.
