Today's expanded complaint asks the court for another ruling in favor of the news outlets Trump tried to ban: "The court should declare unlawful the president's ban of plaintiffs and the White House’s further unconstitutional actions, including its continued exclusions of plaintiffs from specific White House press areas for retaliatory and viewpoint-discriminatory reasons, and enter permanent injunctive relief in favor of CNN, MS NOW, and Politico." cnn.com/2026/10/28/media/cnn…

I joined fellow UN experts in expressing serious concern over the response to student protests in France. Excessive force, violence and mass arrests are not an appropriate response to social protest in a democratic society governed by the rule of law. Reports of serious — in some cases irreversible — injuries suffered by young demonstrators, including minors, demand prompt and effective action. Violence against police officers and damage to property must also be investigated and those responsible held accountable. But public order cannot become a justification for sidelining fundamental freedoms. Mass arrests and disproportionate policing can have a profound chilling effect on the exercise of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. Authorities have a duty to facilitate peaceful protest, address its underlying causes and ensure that any use of force remains strictly necessary and proportionate.
#France: UN experts appalled by crackdown on student protests. “The scale of the arrests and detention appears disproportionate and deters demonstrators from exercising their freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly.” ohchr.org/en/press-releases/…

Yesterday, after weeks of escalating crackdowns, Egypt’s govt shut down Mada Masr, one of the country’s leading independent outlets, & convicted its editor-in-chief, Lina Attalah.   They must reverse this decision & stop their assault on press freedoms.   Journalism is not a crime.
Less than a month after arresting the entire Matsadaash newsroom, the Egyptian govt has now filed baseless charges against the editor-in-chief of Mada Masr, continuing their largest crackdown in years.   This assault on the free press must end NOW. Journalism is not a crime.

I’ve so much admiration for Lina Attalah and her colleagues in Egypt. They set an example for journalistic courage and independence that all of us can learn from.
CPJ condemns the conviction of Lina Attalah, editor-in-chief of the independent Egyptian news outlet @MadaMasr, on charges of running an unlicensed website. We call on Egyptian authorities to reverse the ruling, release the journalist immediately, and end their escalating campaign against independent journalism. The Committee to Protect Journalists calls on Iranian authorities to overturn the convictions and immediately release journalists Artin Ghazanfari and Omid Faraghat. The two were sentenced to 26 and 10 years under Iran’s sweeping espionage law, which also criminalizes routine media activities. Read more ⤵️ cpj.org/2026/10/iran-sentenc…

I am deeply concerned by the escalating pressure on independent journalism in #Egypt. Although Mada Masr editor-in-chief Lina Attalah has now been released after several hours in custody, the court ruling ordering the closure of @MadaMasr, the confiscation of its equipment and a 3 million EGP fine remains a devastating blow to independent media. Shutting down one of Egypt’s few remaining independent newsrooms raises profound concerns for press freedom and the public’s right to know.
Mada Masr Editor-in-Chief Lina Attalah was released following several hours in custody after the New Cairo Misdemeanor Court convicted her on the charge of managing a website without a license during the first hearing in the session this morning. The court imposed the maximum penalty for the charge, a LE3 million fine and an order for the closure of Mada Masr’s website and the confiscation of its equipment and devices. Mada Masr paid the fine in full to the court, waiting several hours before procedures were taken for Attalah’s release. During the release procedures, Attalah learned of a one-year prison sentence issued against her in absentia in 2024, on charges of publishing false news and managing an unlicensed website. Her lawyers took steps to challenge the ruling, with a hearing in a retrial of the case scheduled for November 11. During the court session this morning, the court refused to accede to defense lawyers’ requests for an opportunity to review the case file, to submit additional evidence to the court and for additional witnesses to be heard. It then appointed an unknown party to act as Attalah’s defense lawyer, despite the presence of her appointed defense counsel in court and her own objection to being represented by a court-appointed attorney, according to the director of the Egyptian Initiative for Human Rights, Hossam Bahgat.

1/ This isn't front page news, but it's important. For years, Congress has said no taxpayer money to Egypt to help them repress free speech. But Trump ignored Congress. And a disaster resulted for the Egyptian people. Soon, maybe disaster for us. apnews.com/article/rubio-egy…

CPJ condemns the referral of @MadaMasr Editor-in-Chief Lina Attalah to trial for operating a website without a license that Egyptian authorities have themselves refused to grant for years. Egypt is weaponizing its media law to punish independent journalism and intensify one of its worst crackdowns on the press in years, which began with the arrest of six Matsdaash journalists. It is long past time for Egypt to end this campaign and allow independent media to report freely.

The GRU hacked into Jared Kushner's iPhone. Dutch military intelligence (MIVD) then recruited a GRU spy who gave them access to the hacked phone. What MIVD discovered was that Kushner had access to two bank accounts --one Azerbaijani, the other Israeli --where Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Emirati ruler Mohammed bin Zayed deposited money. It sounds like a slightly far-fetched episode of "Slow Horses," but it's real. And it proves just how eye-poppingly corrupt this administration was and continues to be as its "special envoy" decides the fate of tens of millions in Europe in the Middle East. Simply incredible reporting by Matthew Cole, drawn from his new book on Kushner. vanityfair.com/story/jared-k…

I welcome the Sakharov Prize awarded to the International Criminal Court. For victims of the world's gravest crimes, justice means a voice. The @IntlCrimCourt must be free to pursue its mission, independently, and without pressure or intimidation. Europe stands firmly behind President Tomoko Akane, the Court's judges and officials, and their vital work for a world governed by rules.
