It saddens me to see otherwise intelligent Westerners romanticize authoritarian alternatives they know next to nothing about. Such ignorance is a gross affront to those who have been killed, imprisoned, or otherwise brutalized by the CCP.
I want to invite people into a thought experiment, one that I suspect many will find insane.
The thought experiment: China is more democratic than the US.
Numerous *Western* surveys have now found that the Chinese government enjoys more public support than the US government. On the question of legitimacy, China fares better.
China also does better at securing basic economic freedoms and meeting the material needs of its poor. What's the point of the ballot box when politics becomes performative and politicians aren't held accountable when they fail to deliver universal housing, healthcare, or education?
I suspect a big part of the explanation for the Chinese government's commitment to public service is that top-level politicians in China need a proven track record in the domain of public service delivery. The Chinese political system is highly meritocratic, unlike the American one. Becoming a top-level politician in the CPC requires decades of bureaucratic progression.
Of course, China isn't more democratic than the US on every measure. The US has a free press and open competition for political power, although both of these are highly influenced by corporate interests.
While I am not convinced there's a clear answer to this thought experiment, dismissing China as a tyrannical dictatorship is ignorant. There are examples of failed authoritarian states around the world (I've lived in one), and China is not one of them.

Accountability shouldn’t wait until it’s too late. The Jimmy Lai Hong Kong Political Prisoner Accountability Act puts Beijing and Hong Kong officials on notice that the abuse or neglect of political prisoners will bring real consequences, including sanctions, visa restrictions, and international pressure. We are calling on Congress to stand up for freedom and human rights and pass this legislation as soon as possible.

The UN leadership has a long record of downplaying egregious human rights abuses in China. It is hardly surprising that it is now tolerating the open contempt for human rights from a Chinese national heading one of its agencies.

主题是Fight like a girl.
1) speak with grace and truth;
2) trust something bigger than themselves;
3) looks different;
4) have strong will;意愿坚决
Amen🙏🙏🙏!

The CCP's relentless persecution of Christians Continues. The @APPGFoRB has highlighted the detention of 8 pastors who still remain detained.
In October 2025, the CCP detained around 30 pastors and members of Zion Church, one of China’s largest unregistered Protestant churches. The eight who remain in detention are : Pastor Wang Lin, Pastor Yin Huibin, Pastor Wang Cong, Wu Qiuyu, Pastor Lin Shucheng, Pastor Liu Zhenbin, Pastor Gao Yingjia and Elder Wang Zhong.
They face charges including “illegal business operations” and fraud. Zion Church has remained unregistered rather than submit to state controls over religious activity.
Its founder, Pastor Ezra Jin Mingri, was released in July 2026, but the other eight remained detained as of September 2026, with families raising concerns about their health and access to medical care.
The case has also raised concerns over legal representation.
Lawyer Zhang Kai has had his licence revoked, while Ruth Wang left China after pressure over her work on the case.
The CCP - who wage war on faith and belief - should release the Zion 8, ensure access to medical care, families and independent lawyers, respect peaceful religious practice, and end punitive action against lawyers representing religious detainees. @andyburnham @SecRubio

The CPP’s persecution of Chinese people with religious beliefs has led to horrific suffering - underlined today by the death and story of a Trappist monk Benedict Chao – and vividly illustrated in the life of an Irish cousin of my mother who in the 1920s and 1930s worked in China for 20 years. He was hunted down by the Chinese Communist Party’s Red Army. He survived but others from his community were murdered.
Today, Christians in China continue to be persecuted.

Think of Uyghurs – including Uyghur Muslims @MahmutRahima @UyghurCongress Think of Tibetan Buddhists @info_tibet – Think of Falun Gung Practitioners @vicmaywhite .
In China, persecution continues – but too many look away or collaborate.
What is happening now is simply an extension of the terror unleased by Mao and the CCP, continued through the Cultural Revolution, and to this day.
Benedict Chao’s Obituary, published today (August 18th) by The Daily Telegraph, vividly describes the ordeal of Cistercian monks who saw members of their community murdered and tortured.
Note how the CCP burned down their monastery in Hebei, tied their wrists with chains or wire, and put them on a forced march of 100 miles. Of the community of 75 monks, 33 died of malnutrition or exhaustion.
Benedict Chao’s own story led to escape, exile, and then the re-establishment of a community in what was free Hong Kong.
Underlining the nature of historic CCP persecution, are the accounts from the 1920s and 1930s of my mother’s cousin, Fr.Patrick Malone, who was born and is buried in the tiny Mayo village of Aughagower, at the foot of Croagh Patrick.
He spent twenty years as a Maryknoll priest – later becoming known for his poetry, prolific writing, photography and amateur film making.
What I still find deeply inspiring is his endurance in the face of being hunted down by the CCP’s Red Army, seeing parishioners and colleagues murdered, and insisting that every person has the right to believe or not to believe – and not to be terrorised by a totalitarian regime for doing so.
When I was growing up, my late mother spoke warmly about the work and bravery of her relative. She was right to do so and it is wonderful that another of his relatives, Noreen Malone Tunney, has recorded his life and times in her book “Friends You Used To Know.”
When you consider the suffering which people of religious belief have experienced in China, it vividly illustrates why the Vatican is wrong to have made a secret Pact with the CCP cruxnow.com/vatican/2026/08/…
and why it should reassert what Pope Leo has described as “the supreme value of human rights….universal and inalienable” .
Article 18 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights insist that every human being has the right to believe, not to believe, or to change their belief.
St.John Paul II said that the Declaration was “a milestone on the long and difficult path of the human race… an expression of intrinsic human dignity, which the international community is called upon to protect and promote.”
Article 18 is violated by the CCP every day of every year.
The Vatican should not be signing up to secret pacts, discredited Concordats, and offering only silence in the face of grave suffering, even genocide. It should once again be the world voice for religious freedom.
