Is your bank's Board of Directors fully engaged and high functioning?
"What separates a productive, collegial board from a poisonous, weak one?"
@ehmccormick with @BankDirector has some worthwhile insight on that:

Nobody talks about this edge in investing:
Go read the 10-K of a company with a $40 million market cap.
You know how many analysts cover it?
Zero.
You know how many institutional investors own it? Zero.
You know how many people have read that 10-K? Probably four. Three of them work there.
You just became one of the most informed people on earth about this company in an afternoon.
Do that for 20 companies and you know things the market does not know.
Go try that with Apple. There are 400 analysts covering Apple. Harvard MBAs have been reading that 10-K for 20 years. You have no edge. You are just noise.
The greatest investors nobody has heard of are not smarter than Wall Street.
They just went somewhere Wall Street was not looking.
A $40 million sewage pipe fitting company in Ohio has a 10-K.
It has audited financials. Real revenue. Real margins. Real insider ownership.
And nobody has read it.
That is not a problem.
That is the opportunity.
The edge in markets has never been information.
It has always been attention.
Go where nobody is paying attention.
Read what nobody is reading.
Own what nobody is owning.
The market is not efficient. It is just crowded in some places and completely empty in others.
Go to the empty places.
The 10-K is free. The edge is free.
Most people will not do this because it is boring.
That is the point.

IMO @victaurs & @colarion are the 2 best substacks for bank investors. Their themes & data/comp tables they write about are very unique. My goal is to join them in the top three. Investors can subscribe here.

Just spoke to a guy in the following situation:
- Owns two homes, one in LA, one out-of-state
- Tenant in out-of-state home just vacated
- Owner would happily move to out-of-state home and rent LA home (thereby adding a home to the rental market, at a time when fire victims are desperate for homes to rent)
- However, due to the state of emergency relating to the fires, the rent he could legally charge for his beautifully renovated single family home in a hip area is limited to... $3300 / month (<50% of market value)
- So, he's staying in LA
*Textbook* example of the idiocy of capping prices.
It starts with being curious. We should be unprejudiced, objective and broad-minded.

Aristotle’s words hit like a quiet thunderclap. Simple, yet profound. It’s a call to intellectual courage, a reminder that real strength lies in wrestling with ideas, even ones you don’t buy, without losing your footing. Too often, people clutch their beliefs like life rafts, scared to let a stray thought creep in lest it capsize them. But education (true education) isn’t about building walls around your mind. it’s about training it to dance with the unfamiliar, to test it, weigh it, and still walk away your own man.
In a world where folks scream past each other, swallowing talking points whole or rejecting them outright, this feels almost radical.
Imagine if we all took a breath, let a foreign idea sit for a minute, and actually chewed on it.. Not to surrender, but to understand. It’s not weakness, it’s confidence. You don’t have to agree with the globalists, the skeptics, or the guy next door, but you’d be wiser for hearing them out.

It's up to the CEOs of the small banks to run their banks profitably enough that the shareholders are compensated for their investment without the workers paying the price.
And the town benefits from having local decisions made by locals rather than by distant box-tickers.
