youtu.be/U1kVDeXY5Rc?si… Today, the announcement of a new National Neurodevelopmental Regression Initiative represents something families like ours have been asking for: a serious, coordinated effort to understand why some children regress, what is happening biologically when they do, and what can be done to prevent, treat, or reverse it. Behind every statistic is a child. Behind every research question is a family still waiting for answers. Here, is a portion of the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee’s presentation on neurodevelopmental regression and the importance of making it a research priority: youtu.be/U1kVDeXY5Rc?si…

It’s fascinating since the 2008 Nature special issue on Big Data saying that scientist spent 80% of their time data wrangling and only 20% doing science … perhaps this could change that
AI is already reshaping scientific research, according to an MIT & Google study. Scientists use LLMs & specialized AI models for different tasks, save ~7 hours a week, & reinvest much of that time in research — but new bottlenecks are emerging: bit.ly/3UT2G7Q

I reread this every year. I cry like a baby every year. Todd Beamer died a father, husband, and hero. Todd: Hello… Operator… listen to me. I can’t speak very loud. This is an emergency. I’m a passenger on a United flight to San Francisco. Our plane has been hijacked. Lisa: I understand. Can they see you? Todd: No. There are three that we know of. They have knives — razor knives, like box cutters. Someone announced from the cockpit there was a bomb. It sounded fake. Lisa: Your name?Todd: Todd Beamer. United Flight 93.Todd: They killed one passenger in first class. They forced most of us back. Fourteen of us here. Five flight attendants. The guy with the bomb ordered us to sit on the floor. Lisa: Are you okay? Todd: We’re going down… wait. No. We’re leveling off. We changed directions. We’re flying east again. Todd: A guy named Jeremy called his wife. She told him two planes hit the World Trade Center. Lisa, is that true? Lisa: I have to tell you the truth. It’s very bad. Both towers are gone. A third plane hit the Pentagon. Our country is under attack. I’m afraid your plane may be part of their plan. Todd: Oh God. Lisa, will you do something for me? Call my wife and my kids. Promise me you’ll call. Lisa: I promise. Todd: Our home number is… You have the same name as my wife. Lisa. We’ve been married ten years. She’s pregnant with our third child. Tell her I love her. I’ll always love her. We have two boys — David, he’s 3, and Andrew, he’s 1. Tell them their daddy loves them and he is so proud of them. The baby is due January 12th. I saw an ultrasound. We still don’t know if it’s a girl or a boy. Lisa: I’ll tell them. I promise, Todd.(Lisa patches in the FBI.) Agent: Todd, your plane is on a course for Washington. Best guess is the White House or the Capitol. Todd: I understand. I’ll be back. Todd: Everyone knows this isn’t a normal hijacking. We have decided we will not be pawns in their plot. Lisa: What are you going to do? Todd: Four of us are going to rush the one with the bomb. Then the cockpit. A stewardess is getting boiling water. We’ll take them out. Todd: Would you pray with me?They pray the Lord’s Prayer. Then: Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me. Todd: God help me. Jesus help me.Are you guys ready? Let’s Roll.

Clinical and Genetic Factors Associated With Regression in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4271… A timely paper: "may represent a distinct clinical and molecular subgroup within ASD." That would be one or more of the autisms.

Speaking in my personal capacity: The accusation that the IACC did not carefully and robustly consider public comments is wholly inaccurate and contradicted by the record — both the public recording of the meeting and the Committee's adoption of revisions across more than 15 topic areas made in direct response to public comments. Most regressive cases also fall under idiopathic autism - meaning the cause can not be tied to genetics or other known etiology-they also represent a large majority of the profound population with most significant and complex medical needs. You have evil forces like ASF trying to erase these children and cut the proposed funding by the current IACC . Please @SecKennedy do not let this happen they have been ignored way too long.

My child first suffered severe metabolic acidosis/hyperammonemia (not inborn) and slipped into a severe regression ultimately ending up with profound autism. When she regressed her pediatrician recommended developmental and physical therapy- no labs were run, no medical treatment. I wonder every day if she would have received the appropriate care if she would have a better outcome. @SecKennedy please help us!

Now let’s bring this same precision to studying neurodevelopmental regression, profound autism, and co-occurring conditions in autism. At a scale commensurate with the crisis. #IACC #StrategicPlan2026
Gold-standard science starts with world-class researchers. I was proud to visit NIH’s Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton, Montana, with @RepMGriffith and see firsthand the extraordinary work underway, from Lyme and tick-borne diseases to prion biology and other rare illnesses. Thank you to the entire RML team for your hospitality, and for advancing science that deepens our understanding of human health and improves lives.

Thank you Representative Chris Smith of NJ and @SenSueCollins for sponsoring and amending the CARES Act. Your actions resulted in the most significant Strategic Plan by any IACC in 2 decades. Well overdue research into autism regression; wandering and safety; providing support and answers for those most profoundly affected; initiating efforts to address the forthcoming housing and adult care crisis; and so much more is being addressed to help countless families like mine. You are appreciated! @AgeofAutism @katiewr31413491

An Open Letter to IACC 8/28/26 Dear Members of the IACC, Thank you for yesterday's vote to overwhelmingly approve the proposed 2026 IACC Strategy. Having attended the August 27 meeting at NIH, I appreciated the thorough, considerate discourse and the careful incorporation of feedback from deeply knowledgeable and diverse organizations, researchers, clinicians, and public comments. This strategy is a vital step forward, proposing structures addressing the research, translation, medical treatments, and quality-of-life supports envisioned by families since the passage of the 2006 Combating Autism Act. By replacing previous plans with well informed recommendations, this strategy represents a positive turning point for our nation and our families. It aligns closely with the needs of the community by acknowledging developmental regression and validating the experiences of those with profound autism. It acknowledges and expands upon existing research adding in what’s missing to move forward with practical and appropriately ambitious goals. Furthermore, the new strategy shifts the paradigm from a purely social-behavioral lens to a physiological view that accounts for genetics, environment, metabolism, movement, communication, and lifespan accommodations. By focusing on evidence-based solutions with inputs from the committee’s deep knowledge and expertise on Autism, it aims to deliver upon what families have requested from the federal government for over the past two decades. Thank you for your courage and resolve in going beyond the status quo to establish this solid roadmap. I urge the IACC Chair and National Autism Coordinator at NIH to expeditiously complete the final version and pursue next steps with federal agency leaders on ways to incorporate this strategy into meaningful results. Sincerely, Dawn Loughborough Past President of Autism Policy Reform Coalition

When an autistic child or adult goes missing, families need more than hope. They need a rapid, coordinated response — and they need it quickly. @HHSGov, @TheJusticeDept, and @fema are pooling resources for a national alert system to make that happen. 🤝

A child who was speaking stops. A child who looked at you stops. And the answer for two decades has been that this is simply part of autism. It isn't good enough. It never was. If you think regression should be a national research priority, say so before Thursday. [email protected]

A child who does not reliably answer to their name bolts out an open door. Or climbs through a window. On April 28 the Committee adopted safety measures for wandering and elopement and transmitted them to the Secretary. Adopted and sent. After more than a decade of presentations and discussion, this Committee acted. Draft plan, pp. 19-20.
