🌊 The English Waters Megathread v2 🌊 It's been 3 years since my original thread and the prevailing narrative is still one of decline. I went through the latest numbers and put together this explainer video and thread to see what the new data shows. youtube.com/watch?v=mRGeOUsb…

I put this together on the case against "sewage dumping has increased". It's just the basics from my threads on this and some other sources and is for those that won't read through the thread.

It's depressing that time and again policymakers spout nonsense about gas markets and then use these misconceptions as the basis for policy My new report sets out in detail how gas markets actually work and why prices are not "global" Once you understand that there's not even a single European price never mind a single global price, and that UK gas prices now tend to be lower than European ones, it becomes obvious that we need to maximise UKCS production Yet we use pessimistic projections based on a highly hostile fiscal and regulatory landscape as "proof" the UKCS is on its last legs and is becoming irrelevant Alternative forecasts from @OEUK_ show significant upside potential if a more encouraging regime was adopted - the geology is the same but the economic context can be changed The first of my six recommendations is to fix the broken understanding of how the gas market actually works - do this and much of the rest becomes pretty clear #EnergySecurity @Miatsf @mgshanks @AndrewBowie_MP @ClaireCoutinho @griffitha @ColinMoynihanUK @HarrietCross_MP @Iromg @AllisonPearson @afneil @mattwridley @EdConwaySky @MerrynSW @mattotele @Jonathan__Leake @CitySamuel watt-logic.com/2026/09/27/ga…

The UK Met Office has again been caught publishing temperatures from weather stations that don't exist. An FOI revealed Lowestoft closed in 2010, yet the Met Office kept issuing official temperatures for it. The office said they were using "well-correlated" neighboring stations, but the FOI revealed that this was a lie. The numbers were actually coming from a model that was inventing data from 'phantom' neighboring stations. When exposed, they quietly deleted years of readings for Lowestoft, as well as a number of other stations, and added a disclaimer saying their data is "for general interest only." FOIs also show over one third of Met Office stations never existed, and that real high-quality sites like Colwood are ignored. Also, more than 80% of the network is low-grade class 4 or 5, by WMO standards giving 2-5C uncertainty. This is the foundation of the UK's climate record – closed stations, imaginary stations and synthetic temperatures. The Met Office isn't credible.

Controls on wholesale prices would make little difference to retail prices, since subsidies for Dale's windfarms are applied to retail prices, not wholesale. Gas, at 5.2p/kWh (today's price) is still cheaper than power from any wind or solar on ROCs or CfD subsidies.
Staggering turnaround from Dale Vince For decades he's pushed climate insanity as a green tech fanatic only to change his mind He now supports drilling for oil again

To remind. BP are specialists in finding new oil, developing new oil fields. If no licences are going to be granted - and they won't be - for exploration and development then there's no point in BP being in UK waters, is there? Vince is talking about there only being 10% of already licenced oil left which is a gross misdirection.
The right wing, media and press and especially the Telegraph continue to distort this story - BP are not leaving because Britain has some awful regime within which they can't make money - they are leaving because Britain’s North Sea has been all but emptied - official estimates are 10% or 10 years left - production began to decline 30 years go, this is not new. There’s no drama here - real story - capitalist company goes where it can make the most money - surprise, surprise. And that’s in new oil fields - not 60 year old ones verging on empty. They will find a buyer for their North Sea projects though, note they are not closing down. BP have had their way with our North Sea, now they seek the same in Venezuela. telegraph.co.uk/business/202…

Since the Climate Change Act was introduced in 2008, we've cut UK CO2 emissions by 17 million tonnes a year. Globally, they've risen 6.5 billion tonnes a year in the same period. For every 1 tonne of cuts here, emissions in the rest of the world have gone up 382 tonnes. The CO2 savings we've made annually have been wiped out every 23 hours. Also, the Climate Change Committee predicted in 2008 that the long term costs of decarbonisation would be 1-2% of GDP, so that's an average of £585 billion in the past 18 years, £1.9 billion for every 1 million tonnes of CO2 saved, or £1,140 per year for every household. Judging by the facts, the UK has done more than enough, but citizens haven't really had good value for money given that we're still experiencing heatwaves, droughts, wetter winters, and the wildfires you're talking about despite the costs so far. If, after all that expense and sacrifice, and having reduced emissions by 54% compared to 1990 levels, we are still no less impacted by climate change, what makes you think that it will make any measurable difference if we 'accelerate to clean power'? We are hostage to the rest of the world when it comes to climate change, and the lack of progress on emissions in other countries is to blame for where now stand. They are mugging us off, and so are you.

Temporarily cutting VAT and extending the WHD do nothing to address the root cause of expensive electricity. Your other solution of installing more wind and solar will send bills even higher. Here's the forecasts from the OBR & NESO.

There should be a very good reason why this hasn't been reported: it's not true. Here is the daily generation from Peterhead CCGT, which has run flat out at times, supplying a quarter of Scotland's power. Not zero carbon at all.
I can’t believe this hasn’t been covered by @BBCNews, @ITVNews, @Channel4News, @SkyNews or @GBNEWS. According to data retrieved from @neso_energy’s regional grid API, North Scotland has recorded over 90 consecutive days with a daily average electricity grid carbon intensity of 0 gCO₂/kWh. That is #NetZero delivering measurable results today in one of the windiest and most renewable-rich parts of the UK. The figure comes from NESO’s regional grid model and is rounded, but more than three months of effectively zero-carbon regional electricity is still a remarkable achievement. Surely that deserves coverage as a major good-news energy story. @energygovuk @Miatsf ⬇️

Drinking water has improved from 99% to 99.96%. Low pressure has dropped from 2% to 0.001%. Unplanned outages have dropped from 0.4% to 0.003%. Leaks have dropped from 4980ml/d to less than 3000. Household metering has gone from zero to 60% leading to drops in consumption. Properties at risk of sewage flooding have dropped from 32,000 to 3000. Bathing water standards have risen from 27% pass rate to 96%. A 3rd of complaints were not answered within 10 days, now it's 0.4% for 5 days. Water pollutants such as BOD, ammonia, and orthophosphates are massively down and at all time lows. These are all sewage indicators. Other pollutants such as cadmium, lead, nickel, copper and zinc tell the same story. On top of all that we outperform the nationalised systems of Wales and Scotland and the NFP system of Wales. All with similar levels of debt per capita. So what exactly has been a disaster?

UK off shore decommissioning. In any other business sector future costs ( such as decommissioning platforms) that are known about are allowed for on company accounts. Money ( or at least liability) is set aside each year to accumulate until that expenditure occurs. 🧵

We have repeatedly told you to stop repeating deliberate falsehoods, but you still keep saying: “renewables are 9x cheaper”, “clean energy superpower”, “global gas prices”, “£300 off your energy bill”, “maximising domestic production will not improve energy security” and “1 million jobs (ECIU)” 🤷‍♂️

There's a @Telegraph story today that the EU reset would see British Taxpayers subsidising EU electricity consumers. I hate to break it to you, but we already do. In the last year alone we sold 975GWh to DK, NL, FR and BE at a £58 million loss against wholesale cost. 👇

Solar generation by CfD is a trivial portion of overall generation. Total Net Payments FROM solar to date (7 May 2026) of £0.67m, are tiny compared to the total Net payment TO all generators of £13,239.33m to date.
Solar on government CfD contracts is paying money back. Those subsidies that Reform and the anti-net zero lot keep bleating about are currently offsetting the high gas prices by paying back money.

Essentially, Labour has put Britain into a political stasis for the next three years. There's nothing in their policy cupboard that won't make matters worse, so their only option is to do nothing much. That's as good a reason as any for retaining Starmer. He is the perfect man for the job. A bland, visionless functionary will go through the motions until it's time to call an election. Too bad the rest of us just have to watch the country burn - just because Labour is too dishonourable to relinquish power they have no idea how to use.
