I wrote to the Government with cross-party MPs last night opposing this decision.
Rosebank and Jackdaw won’t cut bills they'll just boost profits of fossil fuel giants.
If every country pursues its own deluded self interest the costs of climate breakdown will be unbearable.
Energy Secretary @Miatsf has agreed that the regulator can grant consent for gas to be produced at the licensed Jackdaw field.
Gas from Jackdaw is expected to start reaching British homes and businesses as early as the end of this month.

The chance to keep global warming below 1.5°C with no overshoot is gone.
But urgent action can still limit the overshoot and bring warming back to 1.5°C by 2100.
Current policies, however, put the 🌎 on course for up to 2.8°C this century.

Expensive gas – not net-zero – is driving up bills
Net-zero is, in fact, "helping to shelter Britain from the impact of expensive gas", says @ACJSissons

The science is clear: we can’t afford to burn the reserves we already have, let alone develop new ones. Existing & approved global oil & gas reserves *already* far exceed what we can safely burn if we’re to stay below 1.5C. The minister used to say this herself #Jackdaw 🧵3/4

Sadly there was a climate & nature shaped hole at the heart of Burnham’s speech. Just the same old words on a “pragmatic” approach to North Sea drilling. There’s nothing pragmatic about pouring fuel on a scorching earth - he should rule out #Rosebank & Jackdaw now @fossilfreeLDN

The Burnham government has approved drilling in Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea...
... on the same day the UN warns that the world is currently heading for 2.8C global warming by 2100, a dramatic overshoot of the 1.5C target needed to prevent irrversible climate damage.

Government support for drilling at #Jackdaw takes a wrecking ball to any pretence of UK climate leadership & pours fuel on an overheating world - and for what? It’s equivalent to just 2 months of UK gas demand, creates just 27 direct jobs & has *no* impact on energy bills🧵1/4

This would be economically illiterate & environmentally disastrous & makes us less secure: undermining efforts to cut energy bills by reducing dependence on gas, driving climate emissions & knee capping a market that’s just beginning to take off theguardian.com/environment/…

This is totally incoherent. Science is clear - we can’t afford to burn reserves we *already* have if we’re to meet climate targets, let alone develop new ones - the Minister used to say this herself

We have already extracted more oil and gas than we can burn in our lifetimes and still have a habitable planet.
The Labour Government is lying to us about the climate disaster. And this same energy secretary admitted earlier in the year this will do nothing to lower our bills.

The electric car revolution takes another big step - 30% market share across Europe, that’s a big deal.
Electric cars are cheaper to run and own - and now becoming cheaper to buy, that’s the key last tipping point, the big one. Who would buy a gas burning car now, only a foot or ideologue - like say Clarkson..:).
We don’t need to subsidise electric car sales any more, this news re enforces that, stop bunging £4k to the 1% of Brits that buy a new car in any given year - use the half billion pounds that’s earmarked, for something more useful…:)

It's hard to believe that some experts aren't aware that El Niños have a step-change (ratchet) effect on global climate.
El Niño warming is categorically not temporary.
It is irreversible, permanent, forever.
El Niño is the engine that heats up the planet in apocalyptic surges.
This might be the single most important thing to understand about our situation.
For clarity, I added the steps to the graph...
