ICYMI, I spent yesterday's intro debunking the "points are at a premium" adage used as logic for kicking a FG on 4th down. It doesn't really hold up, so find a new slant!

Made HackerNews for sports because I was sick of missing all the cool stuff everyone was making. Hooked up to a bunch of Substack RSS feeds, arXiv, Twitter, sports data Kaggle comps, your personal website, etc. Submit your own links, upvote other stuff, you know the deal.
At minimum it’s where I’ll go to see what the homies are writing about sports every day. But if you like it too, feel free to sign up, sign in, submit links, and help me cover the rest of the sports bases:

I wanted NBA tracking data I couldn’t afford.
So I wrote a C# scraper and put 632 games on GitHub in 2015.
A decade later: at least 49 research works have used it, including 5 @SloanSportsConf studies and papers at @NeurIPSConf, @icmlconf, @iclr_conf & @CVPR.

The Dream once again held the Valkyries to one of their worst offensive performances of the season.
This time, they paired it with a high-end offensive outing of their own and 24 half-court attempts at the rim.
Atlanta is now two victories away from winning the title.

"Why doesn't he get whiffs if he has good Stuff?"
Current models can be opaque in how they get to their conclusions. To combat this, we have developed a process to illustrate how and why a player's pitches are good/bad/neutral, based on our models. (1/8)

What's the value of a WNBA player's individual production?
Enter Statistical Plus-Minus. It estimates impact by weighing different contributions from a player's stat line. SPM is more stable than RAPM, and it often produces more sensible rankings.
Ranks + methodology below 👇

I created the Lahman Baseball Database nearly 30 years ago. It’s pretty gratifying to see it still being used, maintained, and now getting a major modernization. @SABR has announced some big changes coming with the 2026 update. sabr.org/latest/sabrs-lahman…
