American-born Michael Townley was a bombmaker and assassin for Chile’s DINA intelligence organization in the 1970s. Townley grew up in the US until his father took a job at the Ford plant in Santiago when Michael was a teenager in the mid-1950s. He was unsociable and a poor student but excelled in technical subjects which he studied on his own. At age 18 he married 28-year-old Mariana Callejas, an enigmatic and erratic woman who threw herself into political causes across the entire left-right spectrum. The couple had two children and moved back and forth between Chile and Florida, struggling to build a stable life. In 1970, when far-left candidate Salvador Allende won election as Chile’s president, the Townleys initially celebrated and returned to Santiago, but soon grew disillusioned with Allende’s reforms as the Chilean economy crashed. Michael joined a far-right group called Fatherland and Freedom which grew from a political party into an armed insurgency. The group also received at least $38,000 from Kissinger’s State Department. Michael used his technical skills to build bombs and run a mobile radio station. After the military coup which deposed Allende and installed General Augusto Pinochet as Chile’s President, Michael was hired by DINA, the Chilean intelligence organization. With his American passport, English skills, and technical capabilities, he became an international assassin, placing bombs and running operations in Argentina, Italy, and finally, Washington DC. Townley’s most famous operation was the killing of Orlando Letelier in Washington in September 1976. Letelier was Allende’s ambassador to the US, and a vocal opponent of Pinochet. He was targeted by Townley and his team which detonated a bomb under his vehicle as he drove through Sheridan Circle, killing Letelier and a coworker.
