Who said Indian media didn't have a voice, or spine! Brilliant @Reuters exclusive by @adityakalra
EXCLUSIVE: India’s biggest news publishers including Ambani's Network18, Adani's NDTV, Indian Express, Times Internet & others mount the most high-profile challenge yet to Modi’s privacy law, warning it would “render investigative journalism a benign and neutered recorder of events.” DNPA (@publishers_news) has taken the law to the Supreme Court. They argue it would trample investigative work and let New Delhi identify journalists’ sources. The provisions “constitute pre-censorship which is anathema to any democracy worth its name,” the group’s 698-page filing says. The key concerns: 🔹 Consent: requiring a journalist to notify the subject of an investigation and seek consent “would allow that subject to destroy evidence, intimidate witnesses” 🔹 Erasure: people can withdraw consent and demand their data be erased, which the group says could force publishers to unpublish or heavily redact news reports 🔹 Sources: a “nakedly unguided” power to demand information that “can extend to privileged communications in possession of a reporter or the informant” In a letter to the government, the group said India “has chosen to grant broad exemptions to the state, while failing to extend any corresponding protection to the press.” reuters.com/business/media-t…

"A gradualist in the marketplace and a revivalist in the cultural place..." @prasannara's very apt description of Modi. But is that what is at the heart of the crisis though ... a mismatch between the pace of ideological projects and economic growth, progress, sabka vikas...?
To renew the conversation with an idealistic generation, you should not allow your conscience to be conditioned by iconography, writes @prasannara #CJPProtest #JantarMantar t.ly/Wg3jM

High time this faux high was called out.
🚨 India has gone after Red Bull, Monster Energy, Pepsi and Reliance over two words -- "energy drink" -- and won.... Details breaking on @Reuters India has quietly ordered the companies to stop calling their high-caffeine beverages "energy drinks" -- and after a closed-door standoff, the industry has agreed to fall in line within 90 days. Context is key here -- Energy drinks is a striking category built entirely on instant-energy marketing -- think Red Bull's "Gives You Wiiings" or Sting's ads showing lightning coursing through the body. And it lands in one of the country's fastest-growing drinks markets, expanding quicker than the United States or China. Publicly, the food regulator (@fssaiindia) said in early July there were no Indian standards for such products, and that claims like "vitalizes body and mind" were misleading. It gave no further details. In private, the message was far tougher: drop "energy drink" -- or any similar descriptor -- entirely. At a closed-door meeting, FSSAI chief rejected the companies' business arguments outright, telling them they were free to challenge the decision in court. The industry pushed back hard beforehand. In a confidential July 6 letter, the Indian Beverage Association (@India_IBA) warned that public disclosure of notices could damage reputations, disrupt operations and confuse consumers, and urged a "risk-based enforcement approach." Read all the details here. tinyurl.com/27kzw9ab Edits @Saad_Scrawls

Wisdom, finally! Can we also have some accountability though? Who were the brilliant minds who disrupted the lives of students, parents, teachers, schools with this brainwave in the first place? The same 2 IAS who've already been thrown under the school bus? Was this sabotage?

Turn, turn, turn. Macro forecasts beginning to get revisited and how! (Of course could all get re-revisited if geopolitics / oil take a turn for the worse!) Citi’s latest macro review for India: - FY27 BoP surplus forecast at $45 billion. Pre-RBI policy this was a deficit of $50 billion. - CAD seen at 0.9% vs 2% earlier - FY27 CPI seen at 4.7% vs 4.9% earlier - FY27 GDP seen at 6.9% vs 6.6% earlier And rates - Citi back to saying no rate hikes in FY27!

The killing of Indian sailors "is bound to cast a shadow" on the Trump-Modi meeting in France... "It will also raise difficult trust questions — especially when there’s a workable Indo-Pacific collaborative model to emulate."
Why the draft Iran deal, killing of innocent Indian sailors, western divide at the G7 Summit in France & export ban Anthropic updates test the limits of US unilateralism, it's assertion & blowback, under Donald Trump. My column #StateofPlay m.economictimes.com/opinion/…

For me, this is a pivotal moment in my science communication career, from India perspective. Probably the first time, a major national media invited me to write an fact-based piece on a completely rubbish alternative medicine system that enjoys government protection - Homeopathy. Please make this your must read of the day. I dissect every common nonsensical claim from the homeopathy community and bury age-old myths associated with this 200-plus year old obsolete pre-science artefact that still enjoys an undeserving place in Indian healthcare and which also destroys many young careers. Well done and thank you Indian Express and Ms. Rinku Ghosh, the lead on health, for this! I really welcome this change! No one should be afraid of reporting facts about health misinformation even if it is government supported or promoted. This is the people's right. Full read: Homeopathy survives for reasons that have little to do with effective healthcare. indianexpress.com/article/he…
