Zohran Mamdani championed progressive policies in New York City and now a slate of local Congressional candidates want to take his agenda national. Al Jazeera’s @andyreports spoke to them about their campaigns.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani's slate of endorsed candidates, including Brad Lander, Claire Valdez, and Darializa Avila Chevalier are set to go to Congress as the Democratic primary was the defacto race in these heavy Democratic districts While the general election, will officially lock it in, I spoke to all three of them about their number one priority out of the gate and a small legislative win they'd like to accomplish out of the gate. Here's the story: aljazeera.com/news/2026/11/2…

The Maine Senate race is one of the most fascinating in this cycle and could be one of a handful including Michigan and Texas that decides the balance of power in Washington. But tariffs and high fuel prices have thrown voters—and one industry in particular—into flux. The lobster industry has taken center stage given just how intertwined it is with Canada. I spoke to voters, including lobsterman about this election. Here's the story: aljazeera.com/economy/2026/1…

Totally baffling why Americans are mad. Just a mystery.
Starbucks CEO says the company is planning to focus more on AI and tech, including adding a system that would recognize customers as they arrive in stores to "present personalized digital menus."

Today we’re launching the first AI modeling agency 💅 right inside Glif. Cast hundreds of real AI models, drop your product, idea or brief and let Glif create super compelling content for you end to end. If you still think AI models aren’t ready for real work, watch this 👇

This is fucking disgusting and a crime against humanity. This company is growing real human neurons to use for computing. We don't know how consciousness works! It's bad enough that we don't know what to think of brain-like LLMs. This company says fuck it, remove all doubt, make the computer out of human parts! If you don't think the neurons they are using now are conscious, do you think this is where it ends? No! Obviously not. Obviously if they can get more performance out of something more brain-like they will. We cannot allow them to use literal human brains as computer products. And they know they're doing something horrible. They chose to name their product "mischief" and launch with a "happy halloween" nod. The AI companies are attacking our society in places where we don't have laws yet. Our government needs to react fast.
today, we introduce a little mischief to the world. for four years, we’ve been brewing real brain cells on electrodes to understand how they compute. now, we’ve turned those discoveries into a video model anyone can use. from 0.5¢ a second, mischief 1 is at least 5x faster than its base and the cheapest image-to-video model on @fal and @OpenRouter. soon to be on @awscloud marketplace. it’s not a delusion anymore. biocompute is real, commercial and this is just the beginning. happy halloween.

The future of #ArtificialIntelligence is not pre-determined. As a technology developed by human beings, its future depends on the choices we make. We therefore have the responsibility to guide, change and, when necessary, reject its applications. A reliable system that serves the human person is of greater value than one that is exceptionally powerful but whose consequences cannot be adequately foreseen or controlled.

“Distributed human labor is being used to train AI models by large, centralized actors, who concentrate the resulting profits while in the long run making the human labor obsolete.” Dario Amodei himself explaining how he profits from stealing the products of labor
As Anthropic prepares to IPO for over $1 trillion, a reminder of Dario Amodei’s words shortly after founding the company: “Distributed human labor is being used to train AI models by large, centralized actors, who concentrate the resulting profits while in the long run making the human labor obsolete.” In other words, this IPO will be built off the backs of the world’s creatives - who will get nothing out of it except obsolescence. It is a totally unjust transfer of wealth and opportunity from artists, writers, musicians & other creatives to a tiny tech elite. I hope it is remembered as such. (this quote is from a document he wrote that was unsealed in Bartz v. Anthropic)

in this case I suspect doing things in person will become, far and away the easiest way to do anything. taking the example of restaurant reservations which tech people believe is society’s biggest problem—going to a restaurant during off hours and talking to the host stand works!

To be a journalist is to spend your entire career simultaneously aspiring to work at the New York Times and deeply resenting it for stealing so many local stories without giving credit.
NEW: The Times’s Credit Crisis A recent New York Times front-page feature on chemical plants in the Trump era had deep reporting, stark data visuals, and an uncanny resemblance to a smaller outlet’s earlier investigation. Was this a case of unacknowledged inspiration, a steroidal dose of Times exceptionalism, or sheer coincidence? puck.news/media/2026/10/did-…

Hidden in 300 pages of Anthropic's S-1 were these 2 statements addressing model "welfare." In AI speak, that's the belief that AI models could develop consciousness or even feel pain, which could require them to be treated differently. I dug in here sfstandard.com/2026/10/26/an…

Wait so Anthropic's s-1 says that the calls to "pace the frontier" don't have anything to do with its own model release timelines?!? Am I reading that wrong? Or is this...just 'you can just say things and they mean whatever you want'
