🐦 Fly through a 3D map of stellar nurseries ✨
Scientists have created the most accurate 3D map of star-formation regions in our Milky Way galaxy, based on data from #ESAGaia.
The map extends to a distance of 4000 light-years from us, with the Sun at the centre 👉 esa.int/Science_Exploration/…

This week @astrobites covered not one but TWO big exciting announcements — and the second one just came out! @uw_icecube detected neutrinos from the Milky Way and @jessie_thwaites wrote about it 🥳 astrobites.org/2023/06/29/ne…
Wahoo! The disk of the Milky Way in neutrinos!
🔔IceCube results to be published in @ScienceMagazine tomorrow!
For the first time, IceCube found evidence of high-energy neutrino emission from our galaxy ➡️ bit.ly/3JBfqYa

Wow
Our new paper is out: arxiv.org/abs/2306.11648. In it, we are chasing a vision rather than refined methods, which we have started working on now as we’re learning more about NLP.
Is it possible to use LLMs to come up with good ideas? What if we criticise their response?

A day in the life working at ESA but make it Wes Anderson ☄️💫
Can you spot the special guest? 👨🚀 👀
We are marking #AsteroidDay this year by emphasising the importance of asteroids and how we protect our planet from them.

Today marks the first anniversary of #GaiaDR3! Let's celebrate with a highlight of the Gaia Multi-Dimensional #MilkyWay! This image was constructed from 10 Gaia sky maps and highlights the diversity of Gaia info on a large sample of stars in the Milky Way. cosmos.esa.int/web/gaia/iow_…

ALT The Gaia Multi-Dimensional Milky Way figure is composed of 10 sky maps highlighting different Gaia data products. From top to bottom: 2D stellar motion, stellar ages, star brightness, variable stars, stellar extinction, the interstellar medium, radial velocities, metallicity, 3D stellar motion, star colours. Credits: ESA/Gaia/DPAC - CC BY-SA 3.0 IGO. Aknowledgement: created by Tineke Roegiers, based on different Gaia sky maps created by ESA/Gaia/DPAC - CC BY-SA 3.0 IGO and inspired by NASA's Multiwavelength Milky Way Images.

New paper! We search for – and find – hypervelocity white dwarfs that were launched at 2000+ km/s when their companion white dwarfs exploded. arxiv.org/abs/2306.03914 1/n
Last night I dreamt that my JWST proposal “Which are better: cats or dogs?” got turned down. But on the plus side, the review comments included pictures of all of the pets of the TAC members. (It all somehow made sense in the dream.)
Fascinating read on the observations, models, and future of Betelgeuse, but sad to learn that I missed the Month of Betelgeuse (MOB) in 2018. Nice job, Craig!
