Commonwealth Lawyers Association President Steven Thiru has described as unusual and unfortunate the decision not to allow petitioners’ counsel to make an oral reply during the Supreme Court hearing on the proposed 22nd Amendment. He said counsel were instead directed to submit their response in writing.

Grateful to the UN Special Rapporteur on the issue of the Independence of Judges and Lawyers for raising what BASL, the legal fraternity and this Opposition have said for weeks.
We have to ask the simple question: why must this extension apply to the judges already sitting on the bench today?
A government does not spend its political capital on a two-year adjustment unless it knows exactly whose two years it is buying.
And everyone needs to understand what this means. If a government can decide how long a judge stays, that judge is no longer fully free to rule against the government.
1.1 million cases are pending. Not one is fixed by this amendment.
If the Govt insists on the extension, they should have a Referendum, as the Supreme Court required in 2022. But first explain it to the people, in plain language, in Sinhala, Tamil and English what the implications are, before people can vote on the matter.

🚨 UN raises concerns over Sri Lanka’s proposed judicial retirement age extension
The UN Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers has warned that extending the retirement age of sitting Supreme Court and Court of Appeal judges could threaten judicial independence and erode public confidence.
The UN expert has questioned why the proposed extension would apply to currently serving judges and raised concerns over potential executive and legislative interference and conflicts of interest.
She has called for a transparent, inclusive and consultative reform process with proper safeguards.
