We are the only way the universe may observe itself. We are the most interesting specks of dust in existence.
"He is within striking distance of becoming the first black Senator for Mississippi since 18[81]"
Incredible sentence for several different reasons
The Mississippi Senate race is an extraordinary story. If you dig up the history between the two Scott Colom (Dem) vs Cindy Hyde (GOP). This guy Colom was minding his own business and was on track to be a district judge (local bi partisan choice btw) under Biden.
But Hyde Smith the current Senator wouldn't give her approval, she blocked Colom's nomination and that was the end of his district judge path. So last year Colom decided to run against Hyde Smith. He is within striking distance of becoming the first black Senator for Mississippi since 1871, and the first Dem Senator since 1989.

This is a common misconception. A presidential vote (in a swing state so admittedly not Hanania) has greater than 1 in a million chance of swinging the election. Foreign aid cuts alone may cost a million lives. So just there is an E[life]. 1 trillion $ lost tariffs = E[1 mill $].

This is one of the most mind-blowing stop-motion films we've seen this year. It comes from India.
Using traditional ceramics, Studio Eeksaurus invented a new style of animation. We're exploring:

Hot take: There is something vastly more beautiful in attempting to grasp the sublime with a dozen sentences than in pretending one word can encircle the eternal whole.

Patrick Stewart asked McKellen for advice on Macbeth.
- Well you’ve got that speech, tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow…
- Yes. But I know what that means.
- I think perhaps you don’t. The important word isn’t ‘tomorrow,’ it’s ‘and.’
Stewart lit straight up.

Pop quiz. Without electronic devices, estimate the largest possible value of 𝑎^(𝑏^𝑐) if 𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐 are positive real numbers and 𝑎 + 𝑏 + 𝑐 = 10. Choose the answer closest to your estimate on the log scale.

Fun Fact - I know my drawing below does not look that crazy, but it was by far the most technically difficult drawing I have completed.
This is one non-intersecting line. I drew it with a pen. I wanted to share it.

Talked to a surgeon who’d massively decreased his complication rates over the course of 2 decades despite moving towards newer and less-conservative techniques
“How’d you do it?”
“Some was getting better at surgery mechanically, but the biggest part is you can learn from talking which patients will disobey during recovery, heal badly or never be satisfied. I don’t work with those anymore.”
“Heal badly? You can tell who heals better?”
“You never know for sure, things can always come up. But after hundreds of surgeries a year you can make mostly good guesses from the questions people ask. Good healers ask questions about recovery, when they can start moving and get back to normal life again. Bad healers ask if surgery will fix all of their unrelated health problems, make them happy and bring back their dead dog from 2015. I can’t bring back dogs, so no point operating on those people”

Pet peeve of mine is that when people talk about accuracy what they're actually showing is calibration, as in this graph. You could flip a coin for every market and also achieve perfect calibration. The grey x-axis histogram shows accuracy, and they're ~only accurate for econ.
