Brexit Britain is broken and broke.
Sure, it might hobble along for a bit longer but if ever there was a “country” in terminal decline then this is it.
So what are you going to do Scotland? Cling to the wreckage or start rebuilding from the ashes?

I don't know how anyone in Scotland watching the budget can honestly think they are better off with the dead weight of england hanging around their necks. If Scotland become independent, energy becomes cheaper and businesses move to Scotland #budget26

🧵 This UK Budget completely fails to meet the moment.
We will replicate the £100 support for fuel bills, but the UK Government has failed to cut energy bills by £300 as promised.

The coming crunch;
The OBR says that it expects *no growth* in real earnings in 2027 and 2028 because of the impact of stealth taxes and higher prices
Real household disposable income is also expected to fall in the near term
A reminder that average UK household will pay £1370 more in energy bills than Labour promised, by March.👇

You still haven't explained why GB Energy hasn't created anywhere near the 53,000 new Scottish jobs Labour promised during the 2024 general election campaign.

The "do no harm budget." UK has gov spending near 45% of GDP, debt near 100%. Tax revenue at levels never sustained in the UK before. Crazy fiscal drag. Concerning high income emigration. That's harm enough. Fiddling with cash ISAs and marmalade prices doesn't cut it.

The price of English-as-British rule over Scotland is plain to see. Scotland's Oil robbed by Westminster with nothing but foodbanks to show for it. Time to re-claim Scotland's sovereign independence.

Misleading.
Real headline:
Gas standing charges transferred to unit charges.

Wait a minute, on gas prices...
By moving the cost of the standing charge on to the unit rate - has Andy Burnham actually just put up energy bills for the majority of Scots?
We are colder country & have to put the heating on more, the more gas we use, the higher price we pay!
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Doogan himself has stood in the House of Commons and demanded the redistribution of the standing charge to the unit price claiming it will lower bills and reduce carbon emissions.

Heads up that in the last decade, the full-time equivalent salary on the minimum wage is up 77% from £15k to £26.5k
Meanwhile both the personal allowance and the 40% tax band threshold haven't moved in seven years
In 2016 someone earning minimum wage paid just £795 of tax a year; now they pay £2,773

UK new minimum wage: £27,456 per year.
Higher-rate tax bracket: £50,270.
1.8x difference.
In 1997 there was a 5x difference.
Mind boggling.

The Labour Party has just made our reality even worse - their plan will make Scots pay more for our gas.
Westminster and Treasury are making billions from Scotland’s gas while making our people pay more.
Time to put Scotland’s energy in Scotland’s hands.

If this is accurate this is a terrible budget. Terrible.
The only substantial increase is on defence spending, paid for with borrowing.
Bakes in the approval of Rosebank drilling, which is genuine madness as climate change is not just a human catastrophe but also our biggest national security threat.
The tax rise on banks is tiny and takes us back to the levels under the Tories.
The most pifling cost of living support that will be totally erased by inflation & 25% increase in energy costs, with much of it short-term.
Structural energy price reform - the only thing that will drop prices in the absence of nationalisation - delayed for the long-term.
If this is accurate, this is a budget that guarantees ordinary people will get poorer, oil companies richer, and all of us less safe as Labour doubles down on the sort of militarism that is causing our cost of living crisis and new oil& gas that will drive us towards catastrophic climate tipping points.
🚨 NEW: John Healey is set to announce the following in his Budget later
- The gas standing charge will be scrapped to save £27 a year on a typical bill
- Green levies on energy bills will be scraped "for good"
- NHS prescription charges will be frozen at £9.90 for another year
- Poorer households on benefits will receive extra help with energy bills before January's sharp rises
- The VAT cut on electricity bills, which was due to expire in April, will be extended (though it's not clear if this will be announced in the Budget or separately)
- The Government will remove the link between gas and electricity prices, which currently inflates household bills, "in the long term"
- Banks will face higher taxes, with the surcharge on their profits potentially rising from 3% to 8%, making it the Budget’s biggest revenue raiser
- HMRC will be given powers to seize money from the bank accounts of people who fail to pay their tax
- The freeze on rail fares will reportedly not be extended beyond April
- Online retailers like Amazon, eBay and Temu will be made responsible for collecting unpaid VAT from sellers to fund a cut in business rates for high street shops
- The thresholds for income tax will be frozen again so another half a million people may be dragged into the higher rate
- January's planned increase in fuel duty will be cancelled
- Pensioners relying solely on the state pension will see their tax-free allowance rise to £13,036, in line with the pension increase, so they don't pay income tax
- Billions in long-term borrowing to invest in defence firms and raise the share of GDP spent on defence (without breaking fiscal rules, as the investments are expected to generate returns)
- The upcoming "Your First Home" scheme will be made more generous to provide greater support for middle-income earners
- The Budget will also assume the Rosebank oil field is approved, which will generate "significant tax revenues"

It's worth remembering that stealth taxes will still be at the heart of this Budget
They represent the biggest tax rise in history
Income tax thresholds have been frozen now since 2021 and are due to remain frozen until April 2031
The cumulative freezes of freezing thresholds and allowances is expected to raise ***£67billion*** by 2030/31
The higher rate - which was once the preserve of the rich - is now the norm for millions of people
By 2030/31 5.2million people will have been brought into paying income tax, there will be 4.8million more higher rate taxpayers and 600,000 more additional rate taxpayers
A ***quarter*** of taxpayers will be higher rate or additional rate taxpayers
We've reached the stage where this huge tax raid is almost priced in every year, but it is far more significant than any other tax-raising measure on the scorecard
Paul Johnson, a former head of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, said: "We are talking many, many billions of pounds of tax rises over the decade. People who would 20 years ago have never imagined they would be higher-rate taxpayers are now higher-rate taxpayers."

A new nuclear power station in England has been branded a "terrible deal" for taxpayers. Sizewell C was supposed to cost £20bn. It's now expected to cost between £40.5bn and £47.7bn, with construction finishing between 2039 and 2043.
Ferries anyone?
