For refusing the imperial purple, unlike Napoleon decades on, Washington should go down as not just the greatest president, but greater than the sum of all the presidents that follow. Not for what he did after becoming president, but for his abdication while king in all but name.
In 1783, King George III asked an American painter what George Washington would do now that he had virtually won the war. The painter replied that the General intended to return to his farm in Virginia. The King was stunned. He reportedly said, "If he does that, he will be the greatest man in the world." Throughout history, victorious generals almost always seized the throne. From Caesar to Cromwell, military success usually meant political dictatorship. The concept of voluntarily walking away from absolute power was practically unheard of. But George Washington wasn't like other men. By December 4, 1783, the British surrender at Yorktown was past, and peace was finally assured. Washington commanded a powerful, seasoned army that adored him. Conversely, many of his officers were unpaid and angry at the inefficient Congress. They had the guns, the manpower, and the loyalty to install a new monarch. He could have been King George I of America. Instead, on this day in history, Washington walked into the Long Room at Fraunces Tavern in lower Manhattan. The room was filled with his most loyal officers—men like Henry Knox and Baron von Steuben—who had frozen with him at Valley Forge and bled with him for eight long years. The atmosphere wasn't celebratory. It was heavy with inevitable separation. Washington, usually stoic and commercially reserved, poured a glass of wine and looked at his brothers-in-arms with visible emotion. "With a heart full of love and gratitude, I now take leave of you," he said, his voice shaking. "I most devoutly wish that your latter days may be as prosperous and happy as your former ones have been glorious and honorable." He didn't order them. He didn't demand their allegiance. He hugged them. One by one, the hardened soldiers wept openly. Washington embraced each man in silence. There was no pomp, no ceremony, and no speeches about future conquests. It was just a quiet goodbye between warriors who had done the impossible. Immediately after leaving the tavern, Washington didn't march on Congress to demand payment or power. He rode to Annapolis, Maryland, resigned his commission, and went home to Mount Vernon to plant crops. He did the impossible. He refused the crown. He trusted the people. By stepping down, he ensured that the United States would be a republic ruled by laws, not a kingdom ruled by force. He proved that the military serves the people, not the other way around. It was the final, and perhaps greatest, victory of the Revolution. The world watched in awe as the American Cincinnatus returned his sword to its sheath, proving that character is the strongest constitution of all." #archaeohistories

Excellent news & long overdue. (Again, credit to @CleoPaskal for her tireless reporting on China’s corrupting influence on U.S. territories in the Pacific.)
BREAKING: DHS announces via federal register that Secretary Mullin is closing a Biden-era loophole that allowed Chinese nationals to travel to the Northern Mariana Islands without a visa for 14 days, which four GOP Senators alleged was facilitating Chinese birth tourism. Senators @SenMikeLee, @votetimscott, @SenBillCassidy, & @JohnCornyn had written a letter to Mullin in April, urging him to close the loophole, which Mullin has now done. Via the notice: “The Secretary has broad authority to suspend the program for good cause, including threats to national security, law enforcement interests, and immigration enforcement. The Secretary has determined that there is good cause to suspend EVS- TAP, while DHS, in consultation with the Secretary of State and the Secretary of the Interior, evaluates the program.”

I am deeply saddened to learn of Walter Koenig’s passing. Although we did not know each other well away from the set, we shared the later seasons of the original Star Trek series and the six films that followed. What I observed, and what so many fans have expressed over the years, was a man who genuinely loved the Star Trek community. At conventions, Walter was rarely content to remain behind a signing table. He preferred to be among the people who had kept Star Trek alive for so many decades. That kind of genuine connection is rare, and it will be remembered by everyone who came into contact with him. My condolences to his family, his friends, and the countless fans whose lives he touched.

Anduril's new computer BlueChip is built with metals "America knows how to extract, refine, process & mill at scale." @PalmerLuckey on the importance of building in America: "Things like the thickness of the metal that we used, the level of heat treat that we could do, even the way that we fastened or welded pieces together—they were based on what we already knew how to do at scale in American industry." "I think that we've lost that as a country."
BlueChip. Built in America. America made the first electronic computer to win a war. Now we depend on our greatest adversaries to build the computers that run our economy and defend our nation. Today, we bring it home.

Hey, 60 Minutes, now that the entire premise of your fake refugee story has been exposed as a scam, will you be retracting it? Maybe you shouldn't have used a "prison and border abolitionist" and socialist as a primary source. @bariweiss your credibility is on the line.
“They sent him to Ghana, with full knowledge that Ghana is systematically deporting refugees back to the very countries they fled,” says immigration attorney Meredyth Yoon. 60 Minutes obtained the names of all the people on a flight that left Texas on July 30th and took deportees to three countries in Africa, including Ghana. Of the 19 deportees 60 Minutes reached who were sent to Ghana, 17 say they were then transported against their will to countries U.S. immigration judges ruled they should not be returned to. Moussa Diawara was one of them. The Department of Homeland Security told 60 Minutes that Ghana had provided the U.S. with “diplomatic assurances for [Diawara’s] safety.” Yoon says the U.S. government was warned about Ghana’s conduct in a lawsuit last year. Despite this, the U.S. sent 10 more flights to Ghana, which Yoon believes is a violation of international law. cbsn.ws/4zTVoQo

Imagine be so stupid and bias that you confuse visa procedures in special cases with passport requirements. You people are so deranged about Trump that all logic just leaves your brains. A senior State Department official said the department will issue visas to Flávio and his family and allow them entry. That’s a discretionary visa decision, regardless of passport or not.
If Flávio Bolsonaro has arrived in the US without his passport then he is here illegally. By the logic of the Trump administration that means he should be deported.

The Greek "tyrant" means an absolute ruler, who can be benevolent and even mild: it contrasts with "demos", where rulers are elected through a very small numbers of elite, male voters. We now are beginning to realize that juvenile or destitute or insane voters need reforming.

1/ The man most likely to rape a White British woman isn't on a small boat or an immigrant. He's her partner or her ex. The graph by @TheEconomist is doing rounds, and @RestoreBritain , @reformparty_uk and the rest of the circus of the self-appointed protectors of White British women think that it proves their made up point: that White British women's biggest danger is immigrant men. Well, data and facts say a different story, a story that the circus of the self-appointed protectors of White British women don't want normal people to know. Here's the data. 🧵

❤️ WOW! President Trump just brought angel mom of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray — slain by an illegal alien — on stage and she said this "If you haven't voted yet, GO OUT AND VOTE...it really DOES make a difference." 🙏🏻 "I'd like to thank President Trump for KEEPING my daughter Jocelyn Nungaray's name alive...proving her death was not just a number." "Most importantly, above all, I would like to thank our Lord Almighty Jesus Christ for giving me the strength to stand up here and share her story and share her name." She is spot-on, remember that our votes can SAVE LIVES. Imagine how many American lives were saved because the border is closed now under Trump? And she knows it. THIS MUST NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN TO AN AMERICAN FAMILY. God bless Alexis Nungaray, and may Jocelyn never be forgotten! 🙏🏻

Here is the part people are overlooking: he wasn't trying to be critical. In fact, he was saying his favorite was the Chinese one. He made the rookie mistake of calling Mao a dictator but he was actually saying the China one was his favorite and still getting raked
“When asked about his favorite meme on a French YouTube show, Mbappé replied that one of the memes he finds funniest is “the one where they put my face on a Chinese dictator" (Mao Zedong). Although the interview and the joke were lighthearted in tone, this Mao meme completely backfired on Chinese social media, where backlash erupted today after the interview recirculated online and Chinese football app Dongqiudi (懂球帝) issued a statement saying his remarks had “hurt the feelings of Chinese people.”

CRUCIAL FACTS ON THE FLAVIO BOLSONARO MATTER: It's not just Flavio Bolsonaro who fled Brazil to escape the tyrannical persecution of Alexandre de Moraes and the pro-Lula wing of the Supreme Court. There are dozens of Brazilian exiles who have done the same: dissident journalists, activists, bloggers, and politicians who all fled to avoid certain prison for political opposition. In most of these cases, Moraes has demanded the extradition of those who fled and whom he wants to imprison back in Brazil. But Moraes' extradition requests have been repeatedly denied by multiple countries and institutions on the grounds that these prosecutions are politically motivated or otherwise corrupted. Among those concluing this: Spain, Italy, INTERPOL, and even the US under Biden. Just today, Italy refused Brazil's demand to extradite a person named @edutagli, who was once a top aide to Moraes, but then fled to Italy after Moraes accused him of having been my source in a huge leak from Moraes' office that I obtained for reporting I did with @Folha in 2024. That massive leak enabled us to publish roughly 20 articles proving systemic abuses of power by Moraes against his political enemies: exactly the reason so many Brazilians, including Bolsonaro, know they can't get a fair trial in Brazil. Italy today refused to extradite the person accused of being our source on the grounds that the proceedings would be a farce because Moraes — as he so often does — wants to act as the supposed victim, investigator, and judge, and thus his demand falls well outside of Italy's extradition standards. Again, multiple countries have concluded the same, showing what a farce Brazil's once-respected judicial system has become under the Lula/Moraes regime. Moraes has overseen a system of political persecution masquerading as criminal justice that has been recognized as a sham by multiple countries that are not exactly Bolsonaro allies. Nobody in their right mind who is a political enemy of Moraes would remain in Brazil once if it is clear that he intends to imprison you, since he has proven that guilt is a foregone conclusion and he operates with no legal or constitutional limits of any kind. That is why asylum under international law exists: to protect those who cannot obtain justice in their own country because the justice system has been corrupted and commandeered for political persecution. Many people, such as Julian Assange, have needed that protection (which Lula cheered). Now people need it from Moraes in Brazil. That is sadly one of the main legacies of both Lula and Moraes over the last six years.
